Agree.  I think a lot of the whining is from the lowest budget tourists that are now priced out of LOS, and are pissing and moaning to save face prior to their exit.

How can you agree, and then say:

"a lot of the whining is from the lowest budget tourists that are now priced out of LOS."

I thought Pattaya / Thailand catered for every budget.  ????

Could help to stop hassling tourists trying to enter the country.

And to a degree those already in the country, with police stops when driving, and being extorted for putting a bottle on the ground.

And what about all the garbage/trash on just about every corner and in gutters next to taxis ??. Disregard/overlooking is just another form of Thai apologism. And if they want to increase tourism how about some feng-shui on the corners and sidewalks.

Even many of the once very popular hotels are far from fully booked. Some of the discounts are unbeatable and prices mostly much lower than prior years. Some very good deals for Xmas week. Check other search engines and even more vacancies appear. Don't fall for the "last room" bs. Merry Christmas. MS>

Agreed. Lots of rooms. My favourite condo place behind Big C Extra on Klang has a lot of choice and prices running 700 to 1100 baht. I used the dates Dec. 22 to 27.

What I have noticed is that, throughout the year, it's become easier to get a room and especially more affordable the last year and a half compared with 2-3 years ago.

Hotels definitely have downward pressure on their per night prices.  Nice hotels are going cheap on the internet.

Much the same as bars charging 55 or 65 baht a beer, when in the past, they were charging 80 baht a beer.

It's a race to the bottom.

As Mark Twain said there are three kinds of liars.  There are liars, damned liars, and then statisticians.  One post from the government shows a record number of tourists, the next that tourism and bar and restaurant traffic down.  From purely a visual estimate, Pattaya is busier than it has been in months but still not what it was a couple of years ago.  With the THB high and the hassle given to European and American tourists it is no wonder that some of the usual haunts are down.

This is what a lot of members struggle to understand.

In the past, when western tourists made up the vast majority of tourists to Pattaya, when tourists numbers were up, so was revenue from them.

Now, Chinese and Indians make up the majority of tourists to Pattaya, and their numbers are up, but they don't frequent the traditional bars, restaurants and nightclubs that enjoyed western tourist custom in the past, so despite their numbers being up, the money from them is down, way down.

I have no doubt many 7/11 and Family Marts are seeing a huge increase in sales, particularly of certain products, but that's not great for hospitality establishments.

totally agree but it was the numbnut who stated "you wont get a hotel for love nor money over the xmas and new year week" i was replying too!

bookings are plentiful and at steep discounts too.

It will be quite a shock to many at just how quiet it is here now.  Perhaps some may upgrade their hotel, due to the big discounts on offer.

Yes, plenty of accommodation available.

There is no high season here anymore.  The calendar year is evened out by a steady stream of cheap package holiday Chinese and Indian tourists.

Numbers will increase for the peak season, which is the Christmas and New Year period for 2 to 3 weeks, but other than that, it's just monthly loss after monthly loss, for many establishments here.

Coming out in Jan and can only say good, will help offset the lousy exchange rate

Probably true for establishments (mainly bars) targeting farangs retirees, or even cheap charlies farangs.

It was a big risk targeting such a small weak customers base.

Many bars, restaurants and other that do well with a wider base though.

You will be surprised how quiet it is, but yes, cheap accommodation readily available.

what has happened to the 4 am bar closing time??

They have already moved to another idea

at least one new idea evedyday

the project is to keep the mind busy for the public with

trivial and secondary things. and then the public have

no time to ask the real questions about the important issues and concerns

Meanwhile the ones in charge can keep filling their pockets

So, what do you suggest they do?  Sell, Kingfisher and Tsingtao beer, and add sweet and sour and curry to their menu?   Isn't that the "wider base" now?

What's happening in thailand happened in Spain 30-40 years ago, heaving tourism, good value cheap holidays, and what happened?they got lairy, decided they didn,t want the lager louts, but wanted the platinum American express card holder, and looked what happened to them,Thailand's going the same way.

Little difference between the 2, Thai have the no longer cheap female company(no longer cheap due to exchange rates, once it corrects, it will become cheap again ???? )

And no matter how hard authorities try, even though they are not really trying, this industry is not going anywhere any time soon. If anything its getting bigger
