Merry Christmas from the Thai police! No checkpoints on main roads

The Thai police have promised not to set up checkpoints on main Thai roads from tomorrow - Christmas Day - until after the New Year holidays.

They want to ensure that traffic flows smoothly, said assistant commissioner Pol Lt-Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat.

Huge numbers of travellers are expected on the roads, most going home for the New Year holidays.

INN mentioned the Mitraphap (Friendship) Highway and Route 304 in particular in their report.

But Lt-Gen Damrongsak cautioned that this did not mean that alcohol checkpoints would not be set up. These would be done at night on secondary roads on 27-28th December and January 1st -2nd, he said.

(The report did not mention why 29-31st was not included).

Though checkpoints are off the main roads the police still plan a large number of help points (2,530), emergency response posts (1,869) and those alcohol checkpoints (1,909).

In addition police will be stationed at accident blackspots and will be engaged in vital areas to ensure extra lanes are opened up to ease traffic flow.

All roadworks will be shut meaning that extra road space is available as well.

All the police are cheering their boss coming out with that statement.

Well, I had to read something totally daft today I suppose.....

Sadly...Road deaths now up, for sure..............????

Hey come on man! What are you smoking? Sitting in a tent while watching tv already was too hard for them and now you even want them to work? They'll get paid anyway so why would they do any work?

Probably did it so no officers get run down this slaughter season????

The title should be: Merry Christmas from the Thai police! For the Thai cops!
What do they still invent to escape work?

Thank you!

Just think if Immigration could do the same. No checkpoints until after New Year!

So the drugs will flow to the South, Yabba Crazy

What a relief I can drive on the Highway home, no more taking the back roads for a week.

Let the carnage begin. Make Thailaaan #1 for road casualties.

Carry-on carnage.

Excellent idea. Now the drunkards can use the big highway instead of having to sneak their way home through a confusing maze of winding, unlit back alleys as usual.

Lack of designated drivers?

In all honesty, I don't think it's going to make any difference. They do sweet xxxx all any other time of the year, so why bother now?

Their presence on the roads deter very, very few people from drinking, speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, dangerous overtaking, driving vehicles which are not road worthy, etc., etc., etc.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you all.

There must have been a revolt about having to work, so they came up with the dummy cardboard idea, and now this!

They should raise the speed limit today as well.

I would also tax non alcoholic beer immediately because eliminating fake drunks is important.

There should not be any checkpoints at all, if other countries can do without them, why can't Thailand?

Don't bother to answer that.

Let revisit this post  a few days later? Historically the road deaths drop as the roads are very busy and SLOW. Same as the seven deadly days - less people killed.

Oh, so that's what the checkpoints are for. Silly me, there I was thinking that they were a revenue generating exercise. How wrong can one be?

right, that'll help the road toll.

What is wrong with these people? It can't all be low IQ, there has to be something attitudinal.

When there are check points everybody here complain. When the police announce no check points everybody here complain

Why would they highlight Christmas anyway- this is Thailand , not the West? The 7 days of danger is aimed at a local level around NEW YEAR- Western quasi religious festivals are irrelevant.
