Because we (insert environmental xxxx) want to save the forests. Bags made of paper are not the final solution.

I hear they have simply taken any identifying marks off, ie plain bags.

Yes, they have.

Apparently, it was the paint on their logo that was harmful to the environment, not the plastic.  Continue on as normal.  ????

Not exactly under the table, 7-11 official policy now is, if the Customer requests a bag they get one.

Give out Bags but charge 20 baht a time at which point people swiftly learn

The world managed to get along for eons without single-use plastic bags, a very recent technological development.

There are reusable, compostable, recyclable paper bags. Not good for all purposes, but usable for many.  For some information try: www.sfiprogram.org.  (Seems I saw a 7/Eleven model somewhere.)

While there was some warning of the change --- which is environmentally sound (and why not plastic straws and cups, etc, as well?) --- there doesn't seem to have been much government action to stimulate timely development and marketing of alternatives.

By the way, paper bags are made of soft wood which is not a problem environmentally.  It is HARD woods, which take much longer to mature, that are really scarce. Last I checked, more softwood was being planted than actually needed (in a worldwide sense; local shortages obviously still a problem in some areas).

Strong paper bags are excellent for many, many uses albeit not for coconut milk, but cups developed from wood pulp would be.  Also, waxed-coated paper can be used for many thing, such as wrapping fish or meats.

Another common and egregious use of plastic is in milk and other drink containers in which there have been perfectly satisfactory alternatives previously made out of, for example, waxed paper cartons, or glass.

Now, why didn't the government do a better job working with manufacturers and food and drink producers first ?!  (That ought to stimulate a few posts!

Because its easier to target the consumer.

How many uses do I need out of my reusable (alternative to plastic) bag before it is more environmental friendlier?

For exactly the same reason that we have a recycling industry that doesn't actually work. The whole concept of recycling - and forcing it on the end users - was invented by the plastics industry to deflect the most obvious solution - governments forcing plastics manufacturers to clean up their own mess. It's worked like a dream. "Keep America Beautiful" was a creation of the plastics and paper industries - https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/how-1970s-created-recycling-we-know-it-180967179/

we can look forward to a doubling of wood production,

it may well be fully doable

i personally are in favor of a full ban of condoms

Went to the market yesterday ,they have not heard about no plastic bags .

Big fortnightly buy up at foodland today, 2 shopping trolly worth.

No bags but the cashier did offer for me to buy some.... she looked really confused when I said they were not needed.

My local 7/11 here near Pattaya double bagged my beer last night.
