It's been suggested that the 'target' was one of the girls behind the counter who he shot 3 times. I've also read that the youngster was hit by a ricochet.

Yes, the woman he was out eating with a few days later was not his GF as claimed in this article but actually his wife - so the girl he happened to shot 3 times in the mall may have been his (pregnant) gik - (from a speculative point of view) ....
