Nine districts in Bangkok have been reported with unhealthy air quality on Thursday morning (January 23).

The Pollution Control Department via its website Air4Thai.com reported that it had gathered the air quality situation in Bangkok and its perimeter from 53 probing stations.

As of 7am on Thursday, the level of dust particulate matter not more than 2.5 microns in diameter or PM2.5 was at 27-66 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3). The safety standard used by the department is at 50 µg/m3 while the World Health Organisation prescribes PM2.5 levels at 25 µg/m3 in a 24-hour mean.

The nine districts with unhealthy air quality include Wangthonglang, Lak Si, Bang Khen, Lat Krabang, Bang Kho Laem, Khlong Toei, and Khlong Sam.

Air quality in these areas was determined as unhealthy for sensitive groups such as people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly and children, who should limit prolonged exertion. However, the areas affected with PM2.5 are fewer compared to yesterday with 15 areas reported to fail the safety standard.

People can check air quality reports via Air4Thai mobile application and the website bangkokairquality.com

I didn't see a separate news thread on this article, so I'm adding it here... Simply SHOCKING!!!

TOP POLLUTION OFFICIAL DOWNPLAYS PM2.5 HEALTH RISKS, SAY NETIZENS STIRRING ‘DRAMA’

BANGKOK — Netizens on Wednesday are demanding that a top pollution control official resign after he accused people of overreacting to the smog crisis that reportedly sent 40,000 Bangkokians to hospital.

Despite the growing outrage and anxiety from the public over the surge in PM2.5 levels, the head of Pollution Control Department insisted in an interview that the current air quality levels are still healthy to breath, and dismissed health concerns expressed by netizens as mere “drama.”

“Although the current PM2.5 levels across Bangkok are above the standard, most of them are within the range of 60 to 80 microgrammes per cubic meter, which is not high enough to cause health problems,” Pralong Dumrongthai said during an online interview with the former editor of The Nation, Suthichai Yoon.

Excuse me, but Thailand's own weak health standard is 50 micrograms. And the World Health Organization's standard is 25 micrograms. So BKK's levels lately have been up to 3-4 times the WHO standard, and up to double Thailand's own standard... And the PCD chief is OK with that???

From Sept. 27 last year to Jan. 9 this year, 38,803 people sought treatment for illnesses related to smog at hospitals under the supervision of the BMA, the BMA Health Department said.

It's time for the officials to start doing something more effective than having meetings and spraying water around!

If they can't do their job remove them and replace them with qualified managers.

I tried 15 apps, the one you recommend "air4thai" is the most positive of all, I think it is controlled by the government!

Air Quality fro Gov,t Offices along with a whole load of other stuff

BTW Thais used to think the World ended at the Thai Border, now they think it end at the City Limits of Bangkok.

The Air Pollution is over the entire Nation.

You should be looking at aqicn.org or airvisual.com

Both have better, more meaningful info and work from the international scale for air pollution health impacts, not the Thai-only scale used by the government site that allows much higher pollution levels before considering the air unhealthy.

The stupidity of Thai government air quality reporting, and the local media who parrot their misleading info and repeatedly mislead the public.

The air outside RIGHT NOW in BKK is pretty good in most locations, moderate/yellow on the AQI scale in most places... And yet the OP article is talking about unhealthy air in various locations.

The reason for that is, the Thai govt. air quality data is reported by the government in past 24 hour average readings. So when they report about the data as of 7 am this morning, what they're really reporting about is the average level dating back 24 hours to 7 am YESTERDAY morning.

Which should mean little to nothing to folks waking up this morning and trying to know what kind of air quality day it's going to be outside NOW and TODAY, not yesterday... But then again, what else would you expect from an otherwise backwards government.

The government's PM2.5 monitoring stations produce real time or at least hourly readings, and the government and the Thai media could very well use that data -- the same as is available via aqicn.org and airvisual.com. But instead, they choose to present mainly yesterday's data today as if it reflected today's conditions, which is does not.
