I broke my little toe and it was pointing in the wrong direction so I went to Sikarin Hospital and the doctor manipulated it back into place. At the follow up a week later he said it was now well aligned so he buddy taped it again and told me to come back in a month. I'm basically happy with the treatment but have a few questions.

1) Total cost of the first visit was 3500 baht and 3000 for the second. How does that compare to other hospitals like Bumrungrad at one end and the more budget friendly ones at the other?

2) Won't the skin go rotten if I leave the same tape on for a whole month?

3) I'm going to buy a walking boot. I know it's not strictly necessary but it would aid mobility and speed up recovery. Anyone know where I can buy one in Bangkok? I've seen a couple on Lazada:

Cheap

Mid price

Expensive

I'd prefer to go to a shop though so I can inspect them first.

Not sure what the “walking Boot is going to do for your toe.

The tape will not rot your skin, but I would try to keep it dry.

When I had a hammer-toe surgery I just cut the toe out of an old shoe.

My experience is it is difficult to complete an appointment with a doctor at a real hospital for less then 3,000 b.

Your toe will not rot if the tape starts looking bad retape it yourself.

They probably would have sold you a walking boot if you needed one.  But, if it fits your situation and desire maybe you will get some sympathy and possible hookups if you wear one.

I was years back stacking firewood up to around headheight...

Log wood was 40cm long, 20cm diameter - landed fair'n'square on little toe, missing every thing else

Dr said it was (bone) severed. Reshaped, and Taped it up by itself, and gave me some crutches; saying to come back in a coupla weeks

coming back into his surgery, and he's looking(asking) shaking head...saying at me - "why you still using those crutches? it's only the little toe"

felt like replying it was more comfortable than trying to walk on heel... ????

250bht in a government hospital (or less), but a bit of waiting around.

Second visit would have cost 50bht, an extra 100bht if they did an x-ray (which they probably wouldn't).

I have broken the same little toe 3 times now, The first time I went to a private clinic, saw the specialist and had an x-ray total 800 Baht, But he said there's not much they can do for a broken toe, he strapped it up and sent me home, and from there on I just re-strapped it after each shower with new tape. the second and third time I broke the same toe, I didn't bother with the Doc's, not much point paying money when they are not going to do much and I can strap it myself. Sure there is pain when walking, but it's manageable. Last week I did it again and the bone in the foot behind it, I don't need an x ray to know it's broken, but again I will manage as I doubt the doc's would do much for that anyhow. I must learn to stop kicking the leg of the bed on the way past.

I don't see the point in going for sub-optimal treatments just because it's 'only' a little toe.

I've been to one government hospital in Chinatown and three private hospitals during my time in Thailand and I rate the government hospital the highest. Not much waiting, good treatment and a very fair price.

Curious how was this done, and where was all the money you spent involved? I ask because I bashed my smaller toe on some furniture and the toe seemed to be looking slightly bent, so I just pushed it back myself without any pain, other than what I was already experiencing. Is this all they did at hospital?

How is your foot now? Mine seems to be getting better by the day albeit slowly. Looks OK from the outside but some slight pain when I walk on it after two weeks. I expect this can go on for a few more weeks yet.

Manipulation just involves pushing and pulling under local anaesthetic. If yours was minor and you did it yourself then I can't see a problem. Costs include nursing, x-ray, doctor, medicine and a service charge for getting pushed around on a wheelchair.
