"But if we can contain the virus by the end of February...."

Right now, Thailand is at a fork in the road and they know it.

Close the border to China, focus on local containment and possibly save your country.

Or keep letting the walking dead in, brew your own virus source, be banned by every other country and suffer the consequences...

Your call Prayut...think carefully...you get one chance.

........keep letting the walking dead in .     Sounds a bit harsh .  Don't let any in I say.

The one on the left looks a little sickly. The one on the right - is that thing poking out on the right a virus or are you just glad to see me? Sorry, can't resist Thai gals.

Yes, that's another story. I am trying to avoid making any assumptions, simply looking at available data. The quality of this data is a different story, it's quite possible it is being manipulated.

A few questions:

How does hitting the limits of diagnostic capabilities work? Not enough diagnostic kits? Not enough people to analyze the samples? And what does constitute of a diagnostic kit? I assume they take blood from a person suspected of infection - what happens then? Does it have to go through a complex extraction process, be analyzed using a spectrometer or similar machine?

There have been various media reports of them running low/running out of whatever they need to do the tests. Also of sick people asking to be tested being turned away from overflowing hospitals, etc etc.

That will likely be nearing the peak of the pandemic - not a good time to be flying... especially if you are an old or with pre-existing conditions.  I would make plans to change that date ...

Thai Coronavirus Cases Jump to 25 With One Seriously Ill

By Randy Thanthong-Knight

Quote

The Southeast Asian nation has seen some local transmission, and there could be an “epidemic” in one to two months, where new cases emerge daily, Tanarak Plipat, a deputy director in the Health Ministry, said at a seminar. The government is trying to avoid that outcome, he said.

“It may not happen at all,” Tanarak said. “But we’re prepared for the worst.”

From what I understand, the current turnaround time for test results is 48 hours, not a week.

If that was true, then it's hard to understand how they managed to accrue a backlog of 405 suspect cases awaiting lab test results as of a few days ago.

thanks for your comforting advice ......ever thought of joining the samaritans

Well, I could have worded it better like... sure... no problem ... flying in the middle of a pandemic in a tin can that is no more than a big petri dish in the sky where everyone shares the same air and toilets throws up vapor from infected feces is a great idea.. have a nice trip... ????

So if I got the virus, would this mandatory Thai health insurance cover me at the hospital?

Friend going to the airport in China flying back to USA was stopped at at toll booth and had his temp checked. Got to the airport and they were checking Asians but not white people, and he wondered why? His Chinese wife suggested that maybe only Asians can get this virus.....food for thought, and I haven’t seen anything about this anywhere. Have this question in to a doctor friend who specialises in infectious diseases. Will let you know.

That would be ironic for the Thai government driving The farang out.

Or maybe the rest of us are like Typhoid Mary. Would make things real interesting next time at Immigration when there could be a parting of the seas upon arrival. Might even encourage more online filing possibilities.

Am I the only one who thinks the world needs coronavirus?

Actually, the world needs something stronger ..

How pleasant. Newbie poster. Been here less than a year and a half. And wishing death and destruction on the world. Thailand has a strange effect on some people.

Indeed, should be a three year minimum time moratorium on such wishes!

555 - the level of education and general knowledge in this nation is a constant amusement. My friend's son, now at university, had a Band-Aid on his face last week. "Cut yourself shaving?" I asked. "No, I got toothache," was his reply.

Could say the same about farang who have no idea about the pain killing properties of some local medications. Not unusual to see people with a headache using what appears to be a sticking plaster on either temple. Guess what....it works!!

Those are absolutely the things I'd be thinking -- until and unless this thing gets resolved or stabilized.  If I was home, I'd stay home. If I was planning intl travel to SE Asia, I'd postpone it right now.

Seems sensible to me. My mother is meant to be flying out here in a couple of weeks, but she’s ~60 and has a terrible immune system to begin with. Until we know more, I don’t much like the risk of her being exposed to this while in transit, or her then being around my one year old.
Happy to look back in the future and think ‘remember that time when we freaked out over nothing’ rather than wishing we’d played it safe.

Do you really believe that  a 1000 bed hospital can be built in a week? More like a  detention center dormitory.

Time will tell...  But I'm guessing....

Kinda like the Hubei version of the "Bangkok Hilton."  Hubei Hilton???

And yet, Thailand is still welcoming Chinese tourists, with open arms. The few who are still traveling anyway. Thailand, through extreme myopia, put itself into this position. By putting all of it's eggs in the basket of China, they opened themselves up to a tourism and economic tragedy of immense proportions. It was an inane decision, made by people with little to no experience in tourism, hired based on cronyism, or nepotism, and entirely without merit. When you reach for the bottom of the barrel, this is what you get. The Thai people are in for a world of hurt. Tourism was already in a near crisis stage, due to an extremely xenophobic and racist administration. Now?

I do feel bad for the common Thai. However, in a sense they allowed this to happen, by allowing the totally incompetent army to take over. The only solution now, is to get them out. Hopefully, the youth will rise up. The army is truly despised at this point in time. They are beyond useless. But this could be a good thing in the long run.
