Who said there was? !

"Treatment" presumably means some combination of standard flu/pneumonia treatments: IV, O2.

Perhaps the news reports should have used the word "care"?

FWIW, some Thai authories claim the retroviral "treatment" was vital to the 73 YO woman's recovery/"cure".

That said, he seems to have made a "miraculous" recovery.

You mentioned 'treatment' but I gather you were quoting other sources.  The symptoms can be treated and those symptoms vary from case to case.  Some are 'treated' at home and hospitalisation is not necessary.

Most people will recover.  Some people get no symptoms at all and others can have very mild symptoms.  The recovery period can be as short as a few days, or a couple of weeks in more serious cases.

Good for the guy. The mask is obviously so that some dumb person hailing him doesn't freak out, oh no, I am not going in your cab.

Don't mean to downplay taking precautions but it is a flu variant, not ebola. An otherwise healthy person should recover on their own in a week of laying low, plenty of fluids and paracetamol.

True it's a new variant but med labs have a lot of experience with flu obviously and it's not surprising they are coming up so quickly with drug combinations to fight this thing.

It would be awesome if the Thai medical "authorities" could share his case details (progression of the infection, treatment, body temp etc.).

Without a few more details the skepticism meter is pegging on this one.

I'm sure they'll be sharing such detail with their peers but surely there's a confidentiality issue about putting patients case notes in the public domain? If any western country did it, there would be outrage.

Yeah, people are usually sick with it for a week to two weeks or a bit longer. 95% - 97% of people who get it recover from it just fine.

But a 3% - 5% death rate is still damned scary.

Looking at odds of dying with medical problems, whether from Hunan Coronavirus or other medical problems is interesting.

Last March, 2019 I faced scary odds.
The surgical team told me that in my particular case, I faced a 3% - 5% chance of dying on the operating table when I went in for open heart cardiac surgery.  But I had to accept the gamble in order to have a chance for a much longer life.

      It makes you think.
I find that Theravada Buddhism gives me great comfort. Happy I found Theravada Buddhism and became Buddhist before having my cardiac problem.
    Very comforting.

Maybe he survived a couple of virus attacks before and now has a strong immune system.

Yes, hard to be a taxi driver anywhere in the world if you don't have a well-functioning immune system!

People who catch influenza can carry on much as usual, with just a sore throat and feeling a bit low, or they can die from it if already unhealthy, or anywhere in between.

Nothing unusual about this taxi driver, and not surprising that the Thai authorities make the most of him to reassure the populace. But of course cynicism and conspiracy theories are the default mechanism to reassure elderly falangs of their superiority ...

Well, normally it's done anonymously... Patient A.

In other "confidentiality" news...

Errr...perhaps as the first male to recover in Thailand , Patient A could be a bit of a giveaway?

He's still got a job to do, a very public one. Safe to safe to say Grandma hasn't and can retreat into obscurity. Or pin-up girl for Thailand Health, who knows?

The common cold Rhinovirus is also a Coronavirus.  There’s probably hundreds, if not thousands of types. Always mutating.
The flu can be exceptionally dangerous and it kills tens of thousands each year.
How soon before we get a nightmarish scenario like the Spanish Flu of 1918 again?   It’s not a matter of “if”. It’s a matter of “when”.
In just one or two years the Spanish Flu killed more people than died in World War I & World War II combined.

Err...perhaps posting a photo of him - assume anyone who knows him, knows who he is - with his age, gender, hospitals, and occupation is a bit of a giveaway?

So why not reveal the details of his care? I would think that would go a long way towards mollifying the Thai public?

I mean his "recovery" seems "miraculous". That should be shared? Or if it indicates this is just a simple flu, and everyone can recover similarly with a bit rest and paracetamol, then that's news too?

Why do I think there will be zero deaths due to the coronavirus here? (not a bad thing to hope for, obviously.)

Yes, definitely one of the factors contributing to my skepticism.

But one assumes the thought process was: we need to show confidence, and for some odd reason, protect the identity of the taxi driver, because.

Again, maybe my sense of smell is off - hmm, is that burnt toast? - but this just doesn't pass my olfactory meter.

Why not?

I mean under 500 dead globally in 2 months. With the lowest death rate of any other similar virus globally.

keep drinking the kookaid from the chinese government.  Do you honestly believe they would quarantine hundreds of millions for a simple cold?  wake up

Thailand is earning plenty of browny points with China by its sympathetic media. It is being portrayed as a true friend of China in the Chinese media.

I reckon other countries could learn from this. There is no reason to kick a country when it is down as some other countries/media have been doing.

Blatant propaganda the Nazis would have been proud of, 1st the little old lady & now a taxi driver. Amazing Thailand.

Meanwhile back in the real world China has quarantined people in their homes with only one family member allowed to leave every couple of days to go shopping for the rest, about 18 million people I heard on the radio yesterday.

Don't get me wrong, I hope that this all blows over very quickly and the world can go about it's normal business, I'm not taking any special measures, life goes on as normal in my house.

At least China is doing something against further spreading instead of looking for a scapegoat (like German Nazis did)

And precisely this might strengthen their immune system now so their bodies can also fight the new Corona Virus now.

It looks like reading an advertisement for Gaviscon!

Many people imagine that Thai people have a more resistant stomach than Europeans because they eat chili in almost all their dishes.
It is absolutely nothing;
their stomach is like ours;
Besides, one has only to see the staggering number of patients with a stomach ulcer in all Thai hospitals;
and look carefully at the displays in Thai phatmacies; 30 to 40% are for products that relieve heartburn.

Macao is a penensula in China.

What's your point? ????

That (most of) Hong Kong is also a "peninsula of China" but they still accept (some) flights and have 3 entry points still open from China . One being the Macao / Zhuhai bridge.

Btw, the majority of the big Casinos there are on the Island of Taipa, and normally pull cash way in excess of Las Vegas.

It must be an extreme measure, when we come to talking about tourists and money, to close all these down.

Personally,  I say good riddance to them.
