Red Plates

Featured Replies

Hi

just wondering if any of you guys can offer me an education as to the restrictions of red plates.

yesterday I got a ticket off our friends in brown uniforms for driving at night on red plates. The two people in the police station could decide on the fine, one said 200, the other 400, which of course was the decision after their debate and I was given a receipt for 200.

apart from driving at night are there any other restrictions

have to complete a book for each journey, do in pencil and then erase the next day, just keep at the dealer to sort the new plates out, they are lazy and don't want to pay for the car, which they do once registered.

Actually the real rules are these:

-Red plates come with a brown coloured book. This book has all the car information in the front. The dealer will take 3,000 baht deposit for the plates/brown book, and this is returned when the real plates arrive.

-If the dealer does not give you the book, then the red plates are probably not legal, and you could get a lot of grief from the police if caught, and especially if you are in an accident.

-With red plates you are not allowed to drive at night, but of course everybody does, so you were just unlucky with these policemen.

-If you wish to drive out of the province where you purchased the car, then you must fill in the details of each one way trip into the brown book and keep this in the car. If pulled over you show the trip entered into the book and you're good to go (but of course the night time driving still comes into effect even with the details in the book).

The above points are the laws which you asked about in your post.

Up to each individual to adhere to them or not.

Out of province travel requires you to put the travel details in a kind of a "diary" for that number, it is s brown kind of school book which must be filled out with car and travel details before you leave

Wrong. Only the number plates are on the front. The book is used for each and every car to which the number plates will be attached by the dealer. Rest of your info seems correct to me

Thanks for clarification, I stand corrected on that point. The rest of the information is correct, not seems to be.

I thought they announced about five years ago that they were doing away with the red plates and your new vehicle would be delivered to you with the final plates already on it. Whatever happened to that sensible idea?
