Security forces brace for disorder in Khon Kaen

Phanthep Saokosol

Khon Kaen Deputy Governor Phanthep Saokosol has had 100 soldiers and police officers ring the Democracy Monument downtown in case protests erupt as feared when the Constitutional Court’s verdict on the fate of the Future Forward Party is announced in Bangkok on Friday (February 21).

Phanthep acknowledged there would be nothing wrong with a political demonstration taking place there as long as laws are not violated.

Anyone organising a demonstration must allow security forces to maintain order, he said.

It was in the urban downtown of neighbouring Nakhon Ratchasima province that a rogue soldier unleased a mass shooting on February 8-9 that left 29 people and himself dead.

Phanthep said he wanted no harm to come to the people of his province.

disorder happens when a government is afraid of the voice of the people.

Even more when they try do suppress the voice of the people, be it by force or by abuse of the judicial system

This lead to many revolutions that paved the way to democracy

Friday 21 February 2020 could well be another important day in Thailands recent history.

Unless he was aware of the verdict in advance, why would he feel the need to put out a show of brute force?

Given the very rational and logical rebuttal arguments put forward by Future Forward, and the awful damage it does to a country's reputation to rule a political opponent not to be allowed to exist, a reasonable, lawful and genuine court couldn't even dream of dissolving them, so such precautions should be wholly unnecessary.

Yes, I know graffiti and showing tits in public by foreigners damages the country's reputation, (allegedly) but surely for the love of god, this would be way, way worse?

I'm not understanding the connection between future forward and the mass shooting?

They aint seen nothing yet.  The people have been quiet, but it is just a matter of time before frustrations boil over with this government.  Thailand holds the records for number of coups and is likely to keep raising the bar

Found a FF leaflet, uncannily placed behind the shelving unit

Very well said. Thank you.

Phanthep said he wanted no harm to the people of his province.

Well the answer is simple, let him and his ilk get out of town.

You will have to dig a little bit on the internet and stop reading the fake news distilled on government newspapers and TV;
  an excellent newspaper to read ...

I hope that if dissolution is the decision, that this gets good exposure all around the globe. If that hurts tourism, so be it, the Army government owns the outcome.

I really hope they have the intelligence not to do it.
If this happens, the north and NE of Thailand will again ignite;
not sure they go down to challenge the "yellows" in Bangkok;
they will find other more subtle and especially less bloody means.

Sounds like they already know the verdict!

I'm reminded of the Cambodian model of democracy and remain sceptical. Thailand's goose is cooked.

a lot of them soldiers with them korat machine guns to keep the peace, right

It was a special case that has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Remember that the army is called here "tengmo"

green (khaki) outside but red inside

Have you noticed how much more free and easy Thailand has become since we acquired a democratically-elected government in place of a military junta?

Plus ca change, as our French cousins say.
