Bangkok 7th worst city in world for air quality: Air Visual

Bangkok’s air quality ranking took another hit, with the city being named the seventh worst in the world for air quality, while Chiang Mai was placed tenth, according to the application Air Visual today (February 25) as of 12.50pm.

 

The application showed the Thai capital’s average pollution level at 169 and Chiang Mai at 166.

 

Particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) in Bangkok and Chiang Mai were at 89.9 and 83.6 micrograms per cubic metre, respectively.

 

According to the Air Quality Index, air quality between 0 to 50 is healthy, 51 to 100 is moderate, 101 to 150 is unhealthy for sensitive groups, 151 to 200 is unhealthy, 201 to 300 is very unhealthy, and 301 to 500 is dangerous.

 

Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) said via website Air4thai.pcd.go.th that at 7am today the air quality in Bangkok and nearby provinces was mostly at unhealthy levels, with a tendency to worsen.

 

The PCD found that PM2.5 dust particles were between 54 and 88 micrograms per cubic metre.

By Pasak ham this morning it is over 200.  Thanks to sugar cane burning.  Something the government can control easily, but chooses not too.  The allow the burning and processing of sugar cane and set the quotas.  Currently, I think it is 50%.

This is an absolutely appalling disgrace and shame on a supposedly upper middle income country.  Thailand has endangered the health and safety of its citizens and a multi billion dollar tourist industry in exchange for a discount on sugar cane which benefits a few fat cats in and outside government.  You reap what you sow!

I developed respiratory issues including 2 bouts of bronchitis while I lived in Thailand from 2016-2019. I would never feel thankful for the air that I breathe in that country, it kills. I now live over in Siem Reap, and the air quality is so much better over here, although today we're in the unhealthful range. Thailand's air is toxic, and it kills.

It's not good at the moment, but the air quality in Bangkok is not like this all year, and is usually much better than many cities in Asia and elsewhere.  Exaggerating the effects really doesn't help.

I left Bangkok last week for Malaysia, clean air, clean water, there's a lot to be said for it...... Oh i left out good manners as well........

The air quality 20 km inland from Pattaya has been 130+ every day since the start of the Year.

Frequently, it is so bad ( 170 + ) that I can actually taste the burning.

Polluted Air,  Polluted Oceans, Plastic everywhere, and trash just thrown where ever people think they will not be seen throwing it.

Thailand is still very much a Third World Country, that is trying to be better than they actually are.

It’s only bad for 5 months, but it does permanent damage over time.  Facts aren’t really exaggerations, even though it seems that way these days

Agree,must have had 20 fires around us yesterday,all from cane,today the air is just full of smoke,actually starts stinging your eyes if outside for an extended period there is one solution ban factories from accepting burnt cane,but even then a few brown envelopes and still it will go on. They were even burning in the day yesterday and one must have got out of control,there is a hill about 2 km from me and of course it is bone dry,it raced up there and burnt for ages,could see it glowing into the night.

It's been as high as the 350's here with all the sugar cane burning. You can munch on the air somedays. I've been wearing my mask in the house.

It's hard to blame the Thai people, they aren't allowed much input in the running of their county. Police don't do much - even the most noticeably antisocial issues of ancient busses, patched up with filler and surrounded by a huge clouds of smoke are allowed. There aren't any police doing anything in any soi where I live...

 

We can blame the police, not taking action when there illegal activities, but maybe we should ask why - most are aware that the 'police' in Thailand are not really police at all in any Western sense of the word. But mostly we must blame the Junta - they seized power and show no more than amateur skills at maintaining the country, but great skill in removing any political opposition. 

 

'They' mostly applies to the Thai anti-democracy elite, and royalists, maintaining authority and denying this country the rule of law. It would also apply to the police, who are simply puppets of the military.

 

Asking this question 'Who are 'they'' doesn't say much for your understanding of Thai politics.

I absolutely agree that it's damaging, and to say so is not exaggerating.  However, when people bandy about words like "killing" and "toxic" (not that you did this!) it doesn't help.

I suppose if you keep telling yourself it's OK then it must be. I used to live in BKk years ago and even then the air was visably bad. Looking out of my Condo over BKk one always saw a dark haze engulfing the city all year round, even when it rained the clouds always looked dirty.

Wait till the bruning season starts in Borneo and Sumatra. If I remember correctly there were about four solid weeks of foul air in KL last summer.

Unfortunately this issue is becoming the norm across the whole region, and there doesn't seem to be any political will to resolve it.
