There is no way that Thailand can enforce anything approaching a similar lockdown. People here need to be out on the street every single day just to get enough to live on. A China or even Italian style quarantine would cause social upheaval beyond imagination in this country. My guess is that everything will be handled softly, with staggered shutdowns of schools and businesses, unofficially extending Songkran, and all sorts of social messaging to try and shame people into staying home.

Popular Post Isaanbiker
There were just over half a million visitors from nine countries deemed now to be especially risky. That's one of the biggest jokes I've heard/read in the last year. We all know that people here would lose face, even when it's about a virus or virus-infected people. China controls the news, and so does this country. How come that the reports about Thailand are so different when they come from a foreign source? Do they indeed believe that we buy that BS? I don't, and nobody else with a brain should. These people go through an education where nobody fails. Then they become doctors, nurses, politicians, and soldiers. Some soldiers believe that they can run a country, but they can't. Others don't want to give up their position and threaten other people to give up demonstrating against them./ How does anybody believe a group of people who don't wanna lose their primary income, the tourism? I get it. We are not wanted, but they start to understand how vital our money for them is? Doesn't make much sense does it? The number of infected people is much higher, and if you have doctors who treat sick people with a bunch of Antibiotics and Paracetamol, you've got a problem. But nobody would even say: " Houston ( Bangkok), we have a problem." No country for old (white) men? Go and figure. 1 1

None of the people who arrived went into quarantine, either compulsory or voluntary. So who is scaremongering ? just look up the number of victims of common flu that no one ever mentions; or the death on the spot traffic victims; heart disease and cancers due to unhealthy living; anyone panicking about those or doing something about ? people are used to those numbers, so no one cares and news about that does not sell well. however, something scary does sell newspapers ???????????? 2
johnray
I study at a university in Bangkok with Chinese students. They are allowed to come and go whenever they want but when they return they have to stay 14 days in ''the hotel'' alone. All their food is done via food panda / grab. The university has no rules about masks or hand washing. About 95 percent of the students don't wear a mask. I'm amazed they still want to go back to China for the holidays. They could stay here and experience Songkran for the first time. Edited March 8, 2020 by johnray

Thailand is lucky that the virus does not survive a long time in a hot environment. Otherwise it would just be like Iran. Either government tries to cover up as long as possible. But in the end their incompetence is revealed and its population lose the trust in their government. 2

Sumarianson
Even with the 14th 15th century Black Plague which started in China and spread to northern Italy, (what a coincidence) they shut down the ports (shipping) as it was the main means of spreading the virus. That plague stayed around up until the present when it can still be found in some parts of the world. Why don't the governments shut down the airports and shipping or have full testing of staff and passengers for the virus? Just like during the plague the Chinese authorities are welding doors shut to apartment buildings and letting the virus do its terrible work. We have not evolved since the 15th century. 1

Popular Post Isaan sailor
I watch the exchange rate charts daily. Today’s Baht movement very unusual. All western currencies PLUS the Chinese Yuan shot up by the same pattern, at the same time. Very unusual movement. Could it somehow relate to today’s admission of guilt in Wuhan-exposed visitors? 1 1

Maybe this one will decline in summer time like the flu often does. I'm trying to look at the positive here. They managed to escape from a restricted area as they were about to be escorted to Sattahip naval base for COVID-19 screening prior to being quarantined. https://www.thaipbsworld.com/search-underway-for-80-escaping-thai-workers-returning-from-south-korea/

You are joking surely? The tourism ministry was recently saying everything would be ok because domestic tourists would take up the slack from absent foreign tourists. Pattaya is declaring itself a covid free zone. Not a single foreigner will believe that, but the average issan farmer, they just might. far from lockdowns, parts of the government are still trying to get people to move around via domestic tourism.
