BEIJING (Reuters) - China reported an uptick in new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections, reversing four straight days of declines, driven by infected individuals arriving from abroad.

Mainland China had 24 new confirmed cases on Tuesday, the National Health Commission said on Wednesday, up from 19 cases a day earlier.

Of the new infections, 10 were imported cases, bringing the overall cases from abroad to 79.

The Chinese capital of Beijing on Tuesday saw six new cases involving individuals who traveled from Italy and the United States, while Shanghai had two such imported infections, Shandong province one and Gansu province one.

The total number of confirmed cases in mainland China so far stood at 80,778 as of Tuesday.

The death toll in mainland China had reached 3,158 as of the end of Tuesday, up by 22 from the previous day.

The central province of Hubei, the epicenter of the outbreak, accounted for all of the new deaths, including 19 fatalities in the provincial capital of Wuhan.

Can't help noticing in all of this certain resemblances between Italy & Thailand: aging populations (Italy the oldest in Europe), governments slow to act & not displaying world-shattering levels of competence, anarchically-inclined popular culture ...

What is more worrying concerning the western world, is that the measurements taken by China can not be replicated in more independent minded western populations.

Italy has tried to close its borders and tell their people to stay in homes. The people don't really like nor follow these kind of advices.

Saw a segment of CNN report of a retirement home in Florida. The old folks between age 60-80 were shrugging off the virus seriousness and still gathered for their daily fun and games without protection nor elbow bum. They simply ignored the crisis. Most are Trump’s supporters. Serious case of ignorance is bliss.

In a way I understand their behaviour. When you are on your later phases of your life. When you have "seen it all", what you are supposed to experience in life, then why not enjoy the last days of your life without too much worry? They are old and wise enough to understand that they all will die eventually.

I would compare this phenomenon to the people who have terminal cancer and who know they have only some months to live.  The fat lady will sing, so why not to enjoy the life before the song of death?

I would have thought that they are wise enough to live well and long and realized that they are in the most vulnerable age group for fatalities and should be more careful. I sensed this is a case of obstinacy and misguidance by the President they support.

China's role in the corona virus pandemic is a disgrace. Disgusting and cruel eating habits, combined with lying and misleading news broadcasts.

While China's start was really quite poor, China did end up as a winner on this race. Time will tell, if they'll also win the marathon.

China and many of the SEA countries have the communal response capabilities, which the western world lacks.

One could say that this coronavirus is a virus against individualism as it's against collectivism in large crowds.

Stupporn individualistic minded people, who like to be in crowds (say football, say Hells Angels, say church goers), will be the ones who will suffer the most.

Life goes on after they are no longer among us.

It has just been announced on channel 7 Australia that new travel bans have now been put in place on anyone travelling from Italy to Australia. If they are returning to Australia then they must enter a 14 day self-quarantine but if they are travelling to Australia for any other reason then they must enter a 14 day quarantine period in another country before they are allowed to land in Australia. These new travel restrictions on Italians is owing to a sudden spike in deaths in Italy. 168 people have died in the last 24 hours in Italy is the report from channel 7 Australia

Absolutely spot-on reply!

That could it. However I personally think, they simply don't care anymore.

If I'd be in their situation of having a virtual terminal cancer, I would say my loves to my loved ones and would go out and have some fun for the rest of my short life.

I'm always been pro quality of life and not so much pro for length of life. But that's just me. Other people think differently and that's fine as well.

Now it’s time to blame the West ???? millions from Wuhan we’re traveling the country for weeks before they did anything about the virus.  Don’t forget they arrested those that warned the people and government

No, they didn't. They made him sign a letter of reproach because instead of warning the people and the government, he went public on WeChat in a group comprised of his fellow doctors. No-one from China is blaming the west. Clearly you like making things up.

While we're at it, seeing as you don't get these figures elsewhere, full recoveries from Covid19 stand at 61574 in China. You might congratulate them on that number but I wont hold my breath. Much better if you do that.

Ok. (straps in, this will be good) Which lying and misleading news broadcasts?

We'll get to the programme on disgusting eating habits later, ok?

Along with the balls to actually try and contain it.

Take your time. I doubt he has the wherewithal to do better than one line sinophobia. Does he strike you as the type to watch and understand Chinese television? He's probably got L and R painted on his his shoes and buys his underwear at C&A so he puts them on the right way.

I don’t need to make anything up.  If the country wasn’t on lockdown there would have been mass protests when the doctor that tried to warn people because the government wanted to keep it quiet died.  People in China were seriously <deleted> off, and the censors could not keep up with the outrage online.  I suppose you take the party line in any case.  This virus seems to have started because of illegal selling of wild animals that was allowed in the open, even though it was “illegal“

The last breakout, SARS, also started in China, and though to have been transferred from bats (again) to wild cats.

They have handled it well, besides the fact that it likely could have been stopped from traveling anywhere, had they acted on the initial signals of the first doctors, instead of reacting late.

Trump is/was doing the same thing.  Iran tried it too.  Viruses bring out truth.

They are not blaming on the west, although there are conspiracy theories online.  The government of China is now going to point to people coming from other countries that have the virus to distract for their mistakes.

In no way is this over in China, but it will slow because of rising temperatures.  People are just starting to go back to work, and it will likely begin to spread again.

That's where I stopped. The country/province/city wasn't on lockdown when Dr Li told his colleagues in a eight person Wechat group that it looked similar to SARS. Nobody else knew at that stage. He was floating a theory. There were 14 similar cases

You're on nodding terms with the "censors' right? You know about mass protests in China? Do you actually know how a lockdown works? I'm on one now, 14 days because I was in Thailand. Tell me. I'm all ears. ????
