Thailand reports seven new coronavirus cases, bringing total to 82

Thailand reported seven new coronavirus cases on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the Southeast Asian country to 82, health officials said.

 

One person has died so far.

 

Some of the new cases included a 57 year old Thai woman who recently returned from Japan, her 30 year old daughter, a 33 year old Japanese man and a 20 year old Thai student who had also recently returned from Japan.

 

A 41 year old Thai actor, named by Thai media as Matthew Deane Chanthavanij, was confirmed as patient 82.

Thailand reports 7 new COVID-19 cases, including a TV celebrity

 

 

The Thai Public Health Ministry today reported seven new COVID-19 cases, including four members of the same family and celebrity TV actor Matthew Dean.

 

Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Suhum Kanchanapimai told a news conference this morning, held at the Health Emergency Operations Centre, that there have so far been 82 confirmed coronavirus cases in Thailand, with 35 having recovered, 46 in hospital and one fatality.

 

He said that one of the new cases is the mother of one of the 11 patients who contracted the virus from sharing drinks and cigarettes. Another patient is a man who returned recently from Japan and infected his daughter, son-in-law and niece.

 

The 81st patient is a 20-year old female student who returned from Japan, while the 82nd patient is a TV actor and owner of a boxing camp, who is now being treated at Rajavithi Hospital.

The actor, Matthew Dean, told the Thai Rath News Show that was infected with COVID-19, adding that he immediately alerted his family, friends and colleagues, with whom he had been in contact in the last few days.

 

On Friday, TV Channel 3, where Matthew has been working, has ordered all staff working on the same floor of its building to go home and remain there for a 14 day quarantine period.  The floor was later cleansed with disinfectants and the S&P outlet in the building has been closed for 14 days.

How many have been tested - 83?

The Thai TV news today, and last night, was full of reports about a certain well-known Thai leuk kreung actor who has publicly posted that he's CV positive, and apparently had quite an extended network of personal contacts. Not clear or not whether his case has been confirmed by the government or not.

 

But yesterday, in the news, some Thai public health official was talking about threatening the guy with a prosecution under the Computer Crimes Act for posting content online that could create public panic, harm to the country, etc etc...  What a bunch of <deleted>!!!!

Their own reports says they have a current backlog of 1700+ people with symptoms who are awaiting final lab test results.

Problem is, they don't give any information on who, where, why etc !!

Singapore is giving clear information on a case by case basis incl contact tracing..

One new case from yesterday was a guy who had been in Thailand just previously...

What we are seeing is one of the down sides of residing in Thailand. Public health issue occurs? ...Hide it under the rug, misreport and do not give details because they want to save face and not admit how ill equiped they are to meet the challenges of a public health issues such as Covid-19.

Don’t worry. He won’t be going to prison for computer crimes as he’s officially been confirmed to have covid19. Thank god, huh.

Because although Singapore is ruled by an autocratic government, they are still humane enough to want to protect their own citizens. This bunch of muppets think protecting the economy is better than saving lives!

It's a matter of perception whether they're "humane". All governments to some extent rely on the "consent of the governed", even autocratic ones. Look at how the Chinese emperor is trying to re-frame the narrative. In today's Economist there's a brief article on how North Korea's ruler is terrified of losing "the mandate of heaven" if Covid-19 runs amok in that country

from an article and video I watched from the UK if you x's that by 10 or 20 you would have a true possible figure of those with possible infections or are asymptomatic

They are petrified of a mass panic.

Thais really worry about two things; viruses and tsunamis.

Covid19 is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS.

There are reports of a kid getting it from a autographed photo of a athlete who tested positive.

All the politicians who acted like nothing was wrong or met unknowingly with Covid19 positive people are all dropping like flies now all over the world.

Seattle hospitals saying they are one day away from becoming Italy. Totally overwhelmed.

those of you who are still out in the bars with another person sitting right next to you are helping spread this <deleted>.

Traveling right now unnecessary should be a criminal offense. 

i could not imagine being in Crazy House Bangkok during this time. the number of south Koreans, Japanese, AU, UK, EU, USA types in there is off the scale.

With the lack of testing and reporting here it's best to assume corona virus is everywhere and take precautions per the medical experts. I'd ignore what Thais say. US seems behind the curve, maybe Chinese and South Korean know the most. I'm going with UK advice

Front page story in today's Bangkok Post. The headline is:  "Actor Matthew Deane has coronavirus"  The article says Matthew Deane also owns a Muay Thai gym (now closed) and tested positive at Ramathibodi Hospital. Channel 3 has closed a floor where Matthew worked.  Meanwhile, his positive test is not confirmed in Thailand because two tests are required.

Coronavirus does not survive nowhere nearly as well in hot and humid 30 C than in below 10 C, the optimum. That is why we are not seeing Thailand becoming a new Italy or any tropical countries suffering a major epidemic. There will be cases but not in huge numbers. Community spreading is much more difficult here due to climate.

The Power Structure of Thailand don-t care about citizens die, this can also be demonstrated by the deaths from road accidents for which no action is taken, or citizens falling ill with respiratory problems because of the shameful air quality.

In short, the Power Structure considers the subordinate social classes racially inferior, they consider them as animals that have to work, consume and die without bother.

It would be a mistake to underestimate the achievements of the Singapore government.  Hans Rosling pointed out that Singapore has the healthiest population in the world even though the place is a swamp on the Equator.   This is in large part because they have a highly effective healthcare created by the Lee government.
