pgrahmm Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 We were/are planning 6 months in the US in August....When this broke I was checking flights....Now I'll hold off until about May to see what the outlook is..... We're away from crowds/people except for shopping.....Taking all the precautions..... I thought that we could bolt to the US (RV there) if needed.... Hard to know how it's going to progress.... I'd feel more endangered in a plane or airport....
Canuck1966 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 This is the horde of people awaiting health inspections after international flights into in Chicago. A social-distancing nightmare! 1 1 1

If they offer a cost free flight change or refund I will take one or the other. If they don't I will contact them a month before I go for options. I'd prefer to be trapped here (home) than in Scotland (cold). I for sure feel less at risk here in my small village, apart from the many now jobless returning youth, there is minimal interaction with 'outsiders'. Shop once a month to Makro/BigC is the biggest risk for me, but if I forego 'luxury items', I feel we are pretty well self-sufficient here. Time will tell. Will also not be going on my annual break to Cambodia, that can wait too. I'm doing exactly the same, trip planned ,booked and paid for with BA for the month of June. I can't get stuck in the UK but will wait and see if BA is still flying to the UK in 10 weeks time to see if they will offer a refund if not, may just be a case of losing the money, lucky I got a good deal, and also did not book internal flights from CM-BKK

Orac Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Too late to make any plans for relocating I would say - the speed borders are being shut down and countries are banning travel the whole world will be shut down in a day or two. Best make plans to hunker down at home for a couple of months or so and wait it out. 2

Metropolitian Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 There are a bunch of movies with the same theme as what is happening right now, like Outbreak, Contagion, Flu and Doomsday. But one particulair movie would be coming close if the virus evolve and the rate of surviving very low. 28 days later.

Metropolitian Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I would not leave, this is my home now for years and will be so. Each trip needed I go south (malaysia) prefered then making the trip all the way to Europe.

Canuck1966 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Not sure if I want to be here for Songkran. There's no way it will be cancelled as the police and local authorities are useless. That could really pass the virus around

Wow, think of those poor girls missing out. Does that mean we have to put up with more of you on here? ???? 1
Popular Post ThaiBunny Posted March 15, 2020 Popular Post Posted March 15, 2020 8 minutes ago, Susco said: So why would it take 4 months in western countries before the peak is reached? China started in early December; it's now mid-March and very, very aggressive containment measures have meant that the Chinese peak has (probably) just passed. Western countries were less aggressive in their containment measures at first and for longer. As well, no-one knows whether we're in for the same two- or three-cycle epidemic that was evident with the Spanish flu - the second cycle was the most deadly. The earlier containment starts, the shorter the time to peak - probably. You need to go check some data modelling sites (Mr Google is your friend) for further information 3

Even if home is UK/eu still no medical help as such, just a bottle of oxygen Completely agree with you. Europe is the new epicentre and it's going to get a whole loss worse until summer kicks in. Same with the USA. In fact, I've just read an article on the BBC News app that suggests that the USA will be hardest hit of all. I do not have much choice when it come to going anywhere, however staying in Thailand is, IMO the safest option anyway. 1
Popular Post spidermike007 Posted March 15, 2020 Popular Post Posted March 15, 2020 I am staying here. I feel very safe here. There are two major issues at stake here, in regard to being able to get back into Thailand. One is Corona. Two is the handling of Corona. Many other countries like China, South Korea, have done a good job with containment, and especially with regard to testing. South Korea developed their own test kit in 21 days! In the US, this has been severely bungled from the beginning. First, the administration turned down the emergency funding request from congress, back in early February, saying it was not necessary. Then Trump repeatedly downplayed this, comparing it to the common flu. His repeated denials caused a massive crisis in confidence, that triggered a massive sell off. Had he been smart, and truthful from the beginning, the sell off would have been milder, and $6 trillion dollars would not have been erased from the markets and people's savings. In addition, the US is badly bungling the test kits. I was scheduled to fly back to the US in a weeks time, and was going to return here late April. The US state department is stating that Thailand will require a letter from a US doctor or hospital, stating you have been given a Corona test, been determined to be negative for the virus, and have a generally good bill of health. The US was just elevated to the next level. He told me even though he works at Cedars in LA, one of the top hospitals in the state, they do not have one test kit. They have been requesting them for weeks, and cannot get them. In addition, he said no doctor will write that letter, since they cannot determine if you are in the incubation period, even if you test negative. So, I cancelled my trip. What is the point of risking a mandatory hospital quarantine, when this thing explodes in the US? In addition, the State Dept. website said that Thailand may require you to provide proof of health insurance, at a minimum of $100,000. Does not apply to marriage visas, according to immigration. I called them. So, again the administration is lying. The test kits may be going out, but nobody knows where they are going, and they do not seem to be going to the major hospitals where they are most needed. Lying Pence, and Lying Trump. Causing a massive public health hazard daily. Cases increased in the US by 900 in the past 48 hours, and 60 deaths to date. Total cases now at 2,999 and climbing. Had Trump not allowed Bolton to dismantle the office of epidemiology, of the NSA, and withdraw that partly $30 million, the US would have been far better prepared. This is likely the election for Trump. Had he not been heading toward a loss in November before, it is a near certainly now, with this severe bungling. 2 1

You are making the mistake of thinking the slowdown in Korea is caused by the epidemic being over whereas the truth is it is just beginning. The appearance of a slowdown is created by the actions taken to reduce the speed of infections not as a result of enough people being immune for virus not to be able to continue to infect. There is a very long road ahead well into Autumn. 3 1

Perhaps because the western countries are land mass huge comparatively & freedom of movement.....The population isn't taking it as seriously, more business as usual while fighting over toilet paper becomes it's preoccupation..... Right now it's only a possible inconvenience....

Not sure about the situation as it change by the hours but nationals could go back to their own country, and held in quarantine. The point is coming back from your own country to where you reside would be very hard to impossible. I hope those non-chinese stuck in China are able to fly out back to their own country if they want to. I have read the usa closed the border but still open for usa residents who are wanting to come back home. Italians are EU and able to go back by flying to..(not germany as it has been closed effecively by yesterday?) Either way we are al in this poo. Even me, if something happen with my family in the west I have to decide to fly there or not.. I have family here in Thailand too but would not easy to come back in as it seems. (The government seems only helping/letting Thai nationals in.) Hope it will all be over soon.
