U.S. records 700 coronavirus deaths in a single day for first time

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. government raced to build hundreds of makeshift hospitals to ease the strain on overwhelmed healthcare systems as the United States marked 700 deaths in a single day from COVID-19 for the first time on Tuesday.

 

That is the equivalent of a person dying every two minutes.

 

Nearly half those deaths were in New York state, still the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio pleaded for reinforcements from the Trump administration, saying the worst may still be weeks away.

 

"This is the point at which we must be prepared for next week when we expect a huge increase in the number of cases. What I asked very clearly, last week, was for military medical personnel to be deployed here," de Blasio said at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, where a field hospital was being built.

 

De Blasio, a Democrat, said he had asked the White House for an additional 1,000 nurses, 300 respiratory therapists and 150 doctors by April 5 but had yet to receive an answer from the Trump administration.

 

All told, more than 3,700 people have died from COVID-19 in the United States during the outbreak, more than the number who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The total confirmed U.S. cases rose to 184,000, up 21,000 from the day before.

 

White House medical experts have said between 100,000 to 200,000 people could ultimately die from the respiratory disease in the United States this year, despite orders in most major cities confining Americans to their homes except for the most necessary outings. More than 30 states have ordered people to stay at home to contain the virus, a move that has strangled the economy and left millions without a paycheck, at least temporarily.

 

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was searching for hotels, dormitories, convention centers and large open spaces to build as many as 341 temporary hospitals, Lieutenant General Todd Semonite, the head of the corps, told the ABC News "Good Morning America" program.

 

The corps, the engineering arm of the U.S. Army, has already joined with New York state officials to convert New York City's Jacob Javits Convention Center into a 1,000-bed hospital in the space of a week.

 

DOCTORS EXHAUSTED

In Los Angeles, the city's massive convention center was being converted to a federal medical station by the National Guard, Mayor Gil Garcetti said on Twitter.

 

In California, the most populous U.S. state, the number of patients with the illness has surged over the past few days, with more than 7,400 cases confirmed as of Tuesday and more than 150 deaths.

 

The pandemic has taken a toll on doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, who are overworked and lack the medical devices and protective gear needed.

 

"The duration itself is debilitating and exhausting and depressing," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told a news conference where he revealed that his brother, CNN news anchor Chris Cuomo, had tested positive for the virus.

 

"I'm speaking to healthcare professionals who say, 'Look, more than physically tired, I'm just emotionally tired.'"

 

U.S. coronavirus-related deaths still trail those of Italy and Spain with more than 11,000 and 8,000 reported fatalities, respectively. China has reported 3,305. An intensive care nurse at a major hospital in Manhattan said he had been shocked by the deteriorating conditions of young patients with little or no underlying health issues.

 

"A 28-year-old, healthy fellow ICU nurse is currently so sick that he has difficulty walking up a single flight of stairs without gasping for breath," said the nurse, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

 

The medical surgery unit at New York-Presbyterian Hospital's Hudson Valley branch has 17 coronavirus patients, more than half its capacity, said nurse Emily Muzyka, 25.

 

"I had a meltdown and cried to my boyfriend," Muzyka said after a relatively healthy, 44-year-old patient declined quickly and required ventilation.

No-visitor policies mean very ill patients may die alone.

 

"I've held patients' hands through their final breaths in the past," Muzyka said. "It's a lonely death."

 

Congress debated whether to consider another economic relief bill after passing a landmark $2.2 trillion package last week that will send checks to taxpayers, inject cash into businesses and fund hospitals.

 

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Congress should focus next on state and local recovery efforts, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urged a "wait-and-see" approach.

 

Goldman Sachs on Tuesday revised down its already pessimistic outlook for the U.S. economy, forecasting it would shrink 34% in the second quarter and projecting unemployment would rise to 15%.

"Yeah, that's just not true. I mean I know that they've taken some steps to create new tests, but they're not actually produced and distributed out to the states."

I agree with the other posters. Wheres the  Reperations? Would be the descent thing to do but its China sadly..

I guess the chinese citizens speaking out about actual numbers of deceased look far more realistic now. If China can lie about the deathbofnits own people why the hell is anyone even dealing with them anymore. I HAD freinds in china i used to work with in the notorcycle industry and they all switched to sell test kits and masks and other medical supplies. Deleted them from FB immediately. Makes me sick.

Hmmmmm  Do they charge inflated prices?  Or do they just charge normal market price?  What do you expect private individuals in China to do ?  Buy and give them away to you for free?

 

You may have a different view and I respect that. But I think its prudent to make  distinction between a Government and what it does ... and what its people do ....

The USA has Covid-19 tested over one million people. Twice as much as any other country. The situation is the more people tested - the more infected people will be found - rate goes up.

Do ya think that just maybe, just maybe that the population of the country might be the relevant number re testing rather than the total number of tests?

And do ya think that it might just possibly matter when the testing was done in order for contact tracing to be more effective? Ya know, in the early stages or in the later stages. 

South Korea and the USA reported their first case on the same day.

Which country do you think has tested a higher percentage of the population?

Which country do you think started testing in a big way earlier in the epidemic?

By what's going on in US, very soon it'll be more appropriate the world asking US for reparation. Think about Mardi Gras 2020, then imagine a million(>200k already) confused patients led by a self-contradicting stable genius.

 

Also since I know some are going to say 'fake number' or 'bat soup': 

1. Chinese never eat the ridiculous smearing 'bat soup' also China don't have many wild animal to begin with. I heard some American countries do ate fruit bats, also I heard unlike China hunting is legal in US and many hunt wild animal for food/leather/recreational. 

 

In China hunting a deer(most deer species are protected and very strongly enforced) or skin a squirrel upload youtube(animal cruelty) like US hunters do daily would face years or life in prison. Even poachers of very mundane birds may face yrs of sentence if caught red hand. China effectively cancelled all hunting/firearm license in 90s and the few left are reserved to minority ethnics for cultural tradition.

 

2. China just annouced numbers of 'asymptomatic carrier'.(nhc.gov.cn) Those are fully monitored and many simply recovered patient developed antibody, thus virus can't produce only still shows weak positive. The numbers are about 1000 in nation total. So even if you list those 1k asymptomatic carrier as 'confirmed' cases China the entirety still miniscule compared to many countries' single day cases number.

 

3. Nature Medicine already published several article states virus are naturally evolved and not man-made. Personally I don't buy either conspiracy US say China P4 or Chinese say US mil fort leak. And as this epidemic IS a natural disaster, how could one ask another country for reparation of a natural disaster? 

 

Certain potus spent time shifting blame and smear others... But don't have time to read in some commonsense, well if a person asks why not 'solid flu vaccine could have much of an impact on corona', I don't think he's a single bit competent to understand the virus situation, nor have any sold ground to accuse and ask reparation.

@JDGRUEN: On March 9th, the same day that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson tested positive for it, and the same day the NBA suspended their season Trump was still downplaying it and comparing it to the flu. And putting Mike Pence in charge of it was more of a way of removing the responsibility from himself and trying to look like he was doing something than anything else. Pence is not a health care specialist, he has no medical background. 

The reality is that Trump's efforts to downplay the virus extended to Fox News, and extended to his base. To the point that they were on social media ridiculing it, and repeating the same claims. It wasn't until it really started hitting the fan and Tucker Carlson of all people started calling out guys like Hannity that they started to take it seriously. That starts at the top. From Trump's need to downplay the virus while now trying to pretend that he always took it seriously.

Exactly. And it's easy for people to try to use numbers at the start of the curve when the number of cases are small and then to try to compare it with something established like the flu. But even with social distancing the comparison is going to look much worse in a week from now than it does now. Etc.

It's already up to 5112 at the time of writing. It went from 558, to 912, to 1049 deaths per day over the past three days. Those three days basically accounting for half the total deaths in the U.S. to date. We can expect those numbers to skyrocket over the next week.
