Thank you for registering your details with the Australian Embassy Bangkok. We hope you are all well and staying as safe as possible.  This is a challenging and worrying time for Australians in Thailand and we are doing our very best to provide you with information and assistance. 

Some who have registered with us are long term residents of Thailand with homes, jobs, businesses and family here. There are many others who travelled to Thailand for a short stay and are now looking to return to Australia as soon as possible.

We are aware of two possible flight options to return to Australia. All Nippon Airways via Tokyo;  All Nippon Air and Qatar airways which have a number of flights to various cities in Australia.

These are your best and most reliable options to get home. Do not delay. If you decide not to avail yourself of either of these two options, you may find there are no alternative and you may be here for many weeks, even months. We cannot guarantee you access to medical services or a safe exit if the situation gets worse.

 

The Australian Government has no plans to evacuate you. Indeed, the Australian Government has been very clear that there will be no taxpayer-funded flights for those who have not taken available commercial options.  It is true that the Government has facilitated a handful of private charter flights in some very difficult locations around the world where there are no commercial options.  But these have not been free or subsidised.  So, for example, the cost for Australians flying out of Peru was over $5000 per person.

If you are in Thailand and want to get home, the message is clear – do not wait, and, certainly, do not pass up options to take commercial flights.

The Embassy is not able to provide you with financial assistance. If you need money for your flight home, please speak to your friends, family, bank orCentrelink for help to pay for your ticket.

 If you require a letter from us to support your visa extension for Thailand, we will happily do so if you can prove to us that you are a long term resident. If that’s the case, please email[email protected] with a copy of your Thai visa, Australian passport and outline the circumstances of your request.  We are unable to support requests to extend short term visa’s.

I understand it to mean "if you are on a one-year extension and need a letter from the embassy for your next one-year extension, if such letter should be required by the relevant Thai government agency"
