Thailand to increase corn output

[10 April 2007] Thai corn output is forecast to grow 3% to total 3.8 million tonnes in the 2007-08 crop year, thanks to high prices propelled by increasing demand, said the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE). Corn Planting areas this year is estimated at 6.16 million rais (1 rai = 0.16 hectare), an increase of 1.3% from a year earlier. Expected adequate rain coupled with better disease-resistant corn strains will to help improve corn yields by 1.6% to 618 kilograms per rai, stated the OAE.Thailand’s corn consumption for animal feed in 2006 was estimated at around 4.2 million tonnes, 62% of which was used to produce chicken feed, 36% for swine and the balance for others.Corn prices are expected to rise this year as production is likely to fall short of consumption in both domestic and global market, the OAE said. The average corn price in Thailand in the first two months of this year was THB 6.59/kg (USD 0.2),up from the THB 5.36/kg (USD 0.16) average the whole of last year.

Khonwan, corn has good potential for Thai farmers as it can be grown between rice harvest and the new rice planting ,as long as water is available, big demand coming from the bio-fuel industry as well.

Hi ozzydom

Just the odd rai of rice grown around my area - the land is too high for paddies and we have no reliable water sources (other than ponds). Most folks here (self included) rotate between cassava and maize, with muang beans being grown before the maize season. Only one maize crop possible since no irrigation. Not so sure about the demand for bio-fuel just now: I'm sure I read recently that Thailand has an over-supply of 20%, blamed on the new government not terminating sales of Gasoline 95 as had been planned.
