snoop1130
Large discounts on consumer goods until June 30 By The Nation In a move to help people affected by the Covid-19 crisis, the Commerce Ministry has decided to reduce the price of 72 consumer products by between 5 and 58 per cent. Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said on Thursday (April 16) that the new discounts will run from today until June 30. The products in the list include rice, palm oil, instant noodles, milk, frozen food, condiments, toilet paper, talcum powder, toothpaste, toothbrush, sanitary napkins, soap, shampoo, face cleansers, detergent and dishwashing liquid among others. Wattanasak Sur-iam, deputy director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, said the drop in petrol price has not contributed to the discounts, because logistics cost has only dropped by between 1 and 3 per cent. “It is our intention to alleviate people’s hardship during this period and help the public. The price of petrol is not related to this,” he said. Chelseafan
All well and good assuming that retailers pass on the savings. One of the biggest problems at the moment is that fresh markets (at least where the missus lives) are being forced to close. She has no access to fresh pork, chicken and fish other than the local Big C and even then they are selling out early every day.

Between 5 and 58 percent discount. I bet that could be worth a month of bar fines for him. Edited April 16, 2020 by bluesofa grammar

How can they and not the manufactures reduce the prices? That's a very good question. As far as I know the PM doesn't have his S. 44 power any longer. So, how does the government order retailers to give discounts up to 58%? Even removing VAT would just reduce the prices by 7%. Are there Government stores where people can get these bargains? Looking on the Tesco Lotus, Big C, and Tops supermarkets websites I don't see any discounts that weren't already offered before today. Smells like a load of 'pony'.

Russell17au
Alcohol prices are to triple when allowed to buy again because those drunken, dirty, trouble making farangs will pay anything for their stupid alcohol. The stupid, dirty, alcohol laden farangs will pay the difference for the discount goods for the people of Thailand

Iron Tongue
This is what Venezuela started doing a couple of years ago, ordering merchants to lower prices on food and goods below what they wholesaled at in order to keep the people quiet. Too many parallels. This will not end well.
