In a move to help people affected by the Covid-19 crisis, the Commerce Ministry has decided to reduce the price of 72 consumer products by between 5 and 58 per cent.

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said on Thursday (April 16) that the new discounts will run from today until June 30.

The products in the list include rice, palm oil, instant noodles, milk, frozen food, condiments, toilet paper, talcum powder, toothpaste, toothbrush, sanitary napkins, soap, shampoo, face cleansers, detergent and dishwashing liquid among others.

Wattanasak Sur-iam, deputy director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, said the drop in petrol price has not contributed to the discounts, because logistics cost has only dropped by between 1 and 3 per cent.

“It is our intention to alleviate people’s hardship during this period and help the public. The price of petrol is not related to this,” he said.

All well and good assuming that retailers pass on the savings.

One of the biggest problems at the moment is that fresh markets (at least where the missus lives) are being forced to close. She has no access to fresh pork, chicken and fish other than the local Big C and even then they are selling out early every day.

Does the government regulate the prices of these goods, as in socialist states?

How can they and not the manufactures reduce the prices?

VAT and excise tax exemption? Subsidies?

That's a very good question. As far as I know the PM doesn't have his S. 44 power any longer.

So, how does the government order retailers to give discounts up to 58%? Even removing VAT would just reduce the prices by 7%.

Are there Government stores where people can get these bargains?

Looking on the Tesco Lotus, Big C, and Tops supermarkets websites I don't see any discounts that weren't already offered before today.

Smells like a load of 'pony'.

Alcohol prices are to triple when allowed to buy again because those drunken, dirty, trouble making farangs will pay anything for their stupid alcohol. The stupid, dirty, alcohol laden farangs will pay the difference for the discount goods for the people of Thailand
