Thailand reports 53 new coronavirus cases, one new death

 

 

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand reported 53 new coronavirus cases and the death of a 48-year-old Thai man who was infected with the virus along with four other family members.

 

Of the new cases, three were linked to previous cases, one had no known links, and 42 are migrant workers who have been under quarantine at an immigration detention centre in the southern province of Songkhla.

 

Seven other new cases were reported from the southern province of Yala, where authorities are aggressively testing the population because of high infection rates there, said Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman for the government’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration.

 

Since the outbreak escalated in January, Thailand has reported a total of 2,907 cases and 51 deaths, while 2,547 patients have recovered and gone home.

Yes just to add before the usual people get on their soapbox.

53 new cases today. However, despite the apparent leap, 42 of the cases are foreigners at an Immigration Detention Center at the Sadao Malaysian/Thai border checkpoint which was previously closed several days ago after an Immigration officer tested positive. The entire center is being tested and quarantined, including staff.

We were warned that numbers would become higher as Thais working abroad returned home, and the same evidently applies to migrant workers coming here. Since the 42 are imported cases, the bottom-line number is actually just 11 new local cases, so still on track.

 

Given the geography of the Kra Isthmus, it should be possible to contain local spread of the virus down in the Deep South. It does emphasise what myself and many others have been saying for days now, though, there are many migrant workers living in cramped conditions in the main part of the country, the government really does need to find out how many of them may be carrying the virus or risk becoming the next Singapore (and I don't mean that in a good way!).

Numbers in Singapore appear frightening, but they are for the most part mild cases, among young immigrants, in a specific area of the city state..

 

New cases among the residents are as low as those in Thailand, and the total deaths still a very low 12.

It's very possible they contracted it in Thailand, then were locked up. Depends how long they were in country.

 

You can be rest assured the situation is far worse than anyone is letting on, especially among the migrant worker communities.

Thailand is over reaction and this is no kick in the nuts.It's just a normal flu event.Watch the video below to get different view from doctors on the frontline of the outbreak.

I would say the situation is far more widespread rather than worse because if there and many many more cases of infections and those are mild or asymptomatic cases then the death rate would drop down to numbers similar to a normal flu event if the doctors in the video I posted above are correct.Beware the cure.

Without being negative in the overall battle against the Covid-19 virus in Thailand, today's figures show why newly reported cases shouldn't be relied on alone. As seen, the figures have escalated dramatically because there was a change in testing (by adding aggressive testing at the detention centre in Songkhla) and IMO the figures will continue to rise if the expand the aggressive testing to other holding areas where social distancing isn't possible.

 

This of course only highlights one particular area of concern. I have said all along that what has happened so far is really only round one of this fight. Round two will kick off when travel restrictions are lowered. And to clarify, this is IMO.

It does.

 

They just spent a good 15 minutes on TV, detailing these 42 cases (coming from 9 different countries).

 

This repatriation had been prepared and announced.

 

It happened also a couple of weeks ago, when there was a sudden jump to 111 new cases, because a couple of planes coming from Indonesia had brought back Thai workers.

 

And it will probably happen again.

Still very low compared to Western countries, this virus killing 10 or so people every month will just have to become the norm just like the common flu, so businesses can start reopening again and Thais can go back to work. Only issue is letting tourists back in the country, I would say they would have to order some rules, must wear masks in public areasx temperature checks at bars, shopping malls etc, wash hands, probably will have to quarantine certain people from hit hard countries for 2 weeks. Not sure how the bar scene would work with social distancing and mask wearing, it will be strange times, I'm hoping I can get a flight to BKK in July.

There are 2 choices:

 

Either let 70% get infected, which will happen in the long run, one way or another

 

or

 

Lock everybody while cultivating fear, and end up living like cavemen

 

Where we stand now, a new Middle Age is awaiting us.

 

It won't be much fun, but still better than the alternative...

There is also the possibility that only one or two were infected and have spread to the rest in the holding area. I don't know about the mechanics of the IDCs during this pandemic, but I can't imagine social distancing being possible. Same thought applies to migrant worker communities.

 

IMO social distancing is extremely important to control this sort of hotspot scenario and needs to be monitored closely in all events of detention.

Not arguing any of your points, just pointing out that less importance to trending lowering figures of reported cases should be given, unless the testing methods are kept consistent.

 

I am, and always have been, one that would side with the 'burn through' approach to this situation. But, that is easy for me to think or say as I wouldn't be responsible for the fatality count that would result from it.

Banning the sale of alcohol not only effects the people who wish to buy it but, more importantly the people who earn a livelihood from the industry. There would be thousands of full-time delivery drivers, brewery workers and independent village shops who would be pretty much out of work for the foreseeable future. To extend the ban based on purely on 42 migrant workers being infected who were already in quarantine would be a huge, and incredibly unpopular call.
