Will impoverished children lose out on education in new normal?

New classroom arrangements in the wake of Covid-19 outbreak in Tak-based Ban Huuai Nok Kok School.

The wide education gap dividing the haves and the have nots threatens to become a chasm now that schools have been closed as part of measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

When the virus first hit Thailand, schools were quickly shut down. But as the Covid-19 situation has been under control to an extent, the Education Ministry’s Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) decided to let individual schools decide whether they should re-open, opt for online classrooms and anything in between.

“There are schools in urban, in rural and in remote areas. Since we believe one size won’t fit all, we have decided to let each school make its own decision, with students’ safety as the bottom line,” said Obec secretary-general Amnat Wichayanuwat. According to a survey, many students living in remote areas of the country did not have access to the internet.

Conducted by Kasetsart University, the survey of 678 public and private school teachers in 67 provinces found that 66 percent of students do not have access to a computer or the internet. About 36 percent of students don’t have a smartphone. The teachers concluded that only about 45 percent of students nationwide had the ability to attend online classes under lockdown.

As noted what education?  Poor Thai even before the virus was barely getting by now with their so call education. Poor Thais have no idea what education is supposed to be nothing to measure.  In my neighborhood even before the virus kids could barely afford a 40 meal instead by 5 baht candy all day and night. So what online education?

My daughter in law little brother comes to the house each day for the once week all he did was play on the phone always no more than a inch from his face one day he comes over his face and eyes are swollen I thought a bunch of bees stung him it was the phone never seen anything like it.

I told the daughter in law and the mother he isn't allow to come here any longer if all he does is play with the phone the kid been learning ABC for 5 years still can't complete it because they say this is the pace of the school. Today while at the house only allow an hour meantime he learns all the ABC front and back, when he returns he should be at the top of his class and that shouldn't be hard.

When our school up here in issaan goes back the students are going back 7 days a week for while  because they have had nearly 4 months without school

If the kid goes to school 40% longer, he will also learn 40% more. Good Thai logic.

Maybe you can suggest 16 hour school days for 7 days a week, in a few years the whole of Isaan will be filled with little Einsteins.

You cannot lose what you never had............

Absolutely........ And especially this present regime wants to 'improve the Military' by buying Submarines and tanks and has no concern for improving the 'Education System'
