He was 1 Km from the intersection when he discovered that his brakes had failed. So, why didn't he cruise to a standstill or shift to lower gears to stop???

It wasn't covered in the "buy your licence from the driving school programme" !

I must agree with many of the comments here.  Old unroadworthy truck and really stupid driver.  Any person driving a vehicle for professional reasons should know what to do in an emergency such as this.  1 km to think about what he could do and he did absolutely nothing.  Hand brake if there was one that worked along with downshifting to a lower gear would have prevented this useless accident.  Turning the ignition key off another option.  If those actions failed there would still have been time to manage a controlled accident before entering the intersection to stop the truck in its tracks.  Shear stupidity on the drivers part.  Well wishes to the victims.

Just the regular BS excuse... by 1 km he could at least have slowdown the vehicle already and not crossing on high speed. He just wanted to give it a try and bet on his luck or Buddha amulet... tit at his best.

One Klick away and he doesn't try going down through the gears to try and take speed off or try any other evasive action ?

Funny how they continually spell Brain... 'Brake' !

They don't learn anything on the "drivingschool program" They only show stupid movies, while everybody fel in sleep.

Compare with western countrys maybe 40 one our driving lessons,  a significant number of theoretical lessons,......then you can try with the examiner!

Brake failure again?

When are the Thai government going to do something about this pesci problem?

Maybe a campaign with lots of photos shoots and posters plastered everywhere, then later used as sun shades by food vendors.....

Or maybe they'll just remove brakes from cars all together and be done with the issue ????

they've tried that, i remember 20+ years ago backpacking round thailand seeing notice boards in bus stations plastered with graphic photos of horrific road accidents including fatalities. seems it didn't make a blind bit of difference as things are even worse now. the only solution is a massive upheaval of the driving test/licensing of drivers, the police doing their job and no corruption. it's not going to happen, all we can do if be as careful as possible.

Death by car accidents is worse than death caused by coronavirus in Thailand. People don't seem to bother to check their tyres or brakes in Thailand.

I usually use my gears to brake down speed.

Why? seriously that method of slowing down hasn't been necessary for about twenty years or more, brakes are cheap and efficient you don't need to use the engine! (unless you are going down a bloody great hill!)

I wonder how many years ago the trucks brakes were checked; 1 yr, 5 yrs, 20 yrs, never?

nothing to do with it whatsoever, a truck like this must have

air pressure to lift the brake, a mailfunctioning brake system

on a heavy duty vehicle latches on the brake, not the other way around

Yep, this 100%. Every air brake canister on a truck requires air to be applied to the canister to release the brakes. Failures mean that the brakes automatically close and the truck stops. Just about anything that uses an air pressure actuator operates in this way. Its a widely accepted standard due to its safety redundancy.

Always good for an eye-roll when 'brake failure' is listed as the go-to face saving blameless reason for an accident, when in reality most accidents are due to the operator driving like a madman.
