Rain lashed Bangkok’s Chatuchak area this morning (May 11), forcing shoppers to scurry for shelter or make do with umbrellas to shield themselves from the heavy downpour.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, thunderstorms are expected until May 13 due to a high-pressure system from China, which will extend to upper Thailand as southerly and southeasterly winds prevail over the area.

The department forecast that hot to very hot weather with thunderstorms, gusty winds and hail will likely occur in the North, the Northeast, the Central region and the East.

On Saturday (May 9), Chatuchak Weekend Market was reopened from 5am to 6pm after being shut since March 22 to prevent Covid-19 from spreading.

Bangkok Governor Aswin Khwanmuang said that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will undertake a big clean-up of the market today to ensure the safety of shoppers and vendors.

Officials will also paint guide marks on the floor in shopping areas to help people maintain social distance.

or make do with umbrellas

What a stupid comment! The purpose of umbrellas is to protect the owner from rain!  That is what they are designed to do and essential during wet weather.  I have seen people "make do"  with a plastic bag, or an attache case or some other bag to shield them from the weather.  "Make do" means to manage with the limited or inadequate means available!

Their forecast was wrong again.

The Meteorological Department issued a warning of bad weather while it was already raining heavily in many parts of the country on 11th May. Knee jerk reaction?

They predicted bad weather for the 12 May again, however there were hardly any clouds in the sky and hardly any breeze. The weather was calm and sunny in Thailand for the most part of the day.

To conclude, their forecast lacks any credibility. I would suggest an inspection to check the professionalism of the staff working at the Meterological Department as they seem to be clueless in forecasting.

They simply forgot to look out the window
