Monitor lizard found hiding out in woman’s car engine

Thailand's monitor lizards face a lot of bad press but they were treated more kindly in a story today on Daily News.

The water monitors' name - hia - is used in Thai as one of the nation's worst swear words and last week one was blamed for eating part of a discarded newborn.

However, today the media were more gentle calling one that crawled into a lady's engine compartment "Hia uan" and using the spelling of hia that means a wealthy business owner.

Thus the headline was a play on words and complimentary.

In the body of the story the creature was referred to as "tua ngern tua thong" (the silver and gold one, a term children are taught to avoid swearing).

This monitor had crawled into the engine of a Toyota Altis that Anong, 51, had parked in a lot on the Pathum Thani to Rangsit road on Saturday.

A security guard told the civil servant that there was an intruder in her car but it was Sunday before a rescue foundation extricated the creature.

It took a while to get it out as it gripped its claws on parts of the engine including the battery and was reluctant to emerge into the heat of the day.

The creature's fate was not reported on this occasion though they are normally "returned to nature".

Ha ha ha! Yes, I sure it was returned to natural environment for here - probably a saucepan.

I remember taking my first Thai wife to West Midlands Safari Park in the UK, decades ago.

Upon seeing a monitor lizard there, her first comment for all to hear was, "They're nice in curry."

Wow! That car must have a big block V8 with a crankcase large enough for that monitor to squeeze into. Or was it hiding in a cylinder.

I've heard of horsepower but lizard power........????

Porky Pies,,,,,,,,Bluesofa,,,,,,,,,No Thai would even think of eating one Ever

Why would you choose to say I'm lying? You know all Thais and what they all eat?

I've never saw anyone eating one, but there again I'm sure there's lots of things I haven't seen them eating.

You'd better tell the people in Yasothon they're lying too:

Always check the lady's engine compartment, you never know what you may find ... ????

What?

It was in the engine compartment, not the engine block itself.

Even if you were unable tomread the story, one would have hoped the pic would have cleared that up.

Stadtler thinks there is nothing tastier than baked lizard.  In the old day, Stadtler would get a 7 pound roast, cut up some fixings, and wrap it all together in aluminum foil.  The Stadtler would place that football inside the car engine and take a drive.

Nothing cooks better than a 1968 Caprice with an 8 cylinder engine.

Stadtler never cooked a reptile, at least knowingly.

Heh Stadtler, I think you mean a '78 Holden Statesman Caprice, as in 1968 it would have been an HK and thus only a Kingswood or Premier (sorry, I'm a Holden guy), - the V8 Statesman was ten years later. (I also saw that TV guy warm a pie on a Statesman block). The whole lot in the foil, into the ashes, takes less time and tastes a lot better. Just sayin'. Of course, my Koori mates barbecue just about anything here in Oz, especially during lockdown. I suspect the monitor lizard though is cold-blooded like many reptiles and, was simply warming himself on the donk, just as many snakes do in Australia and lots of folks find out, usually the hard way after parking overnight in the bush !

Stadtler is definitely less confused than you are.
