Businessman sentenced to four years for DUI fatal accident

 

 

The Supreme Court has upheld the 4-year prison sentence handed down by a lower court to a businessman who, under the influence of methamphetamines, rammed his Mercedes Benz into the rear of another car, causing it to catch fire and killing its 2 student occupants.

 

In confirming the Appeal Court’s verdict, the Supreme Court rejected a plea for leniency from the defendant, Mr. Jenphob Veeraporn, who claimed he graduated with a Master’s degree from university abroad, was an executive of several companies and had made numerous contributions to society. He also claimed that he entered the monkhood for two months after the fatal accident, which took place on the Pahonyothin highway in Bang Pa-in district of Ayutthaya on March 13th, 2016.

 

Veeraporn drove his Mercedes at high speed and rammed into the rear of a Ford car, containing the two students, Mr. Krisana Thavorn and Ms. Thanthapat Horsaengchai. The force of the impact caused the Ford vehicle to catch fire, incinerating both young people.

Wow.  Only took 4 years.  Still, better late than never.

 

Now the question becomes, how much of that 4 years he actually spends in prison before his connections and his cash get him out.

 

He'd probably already be out if he hadn't appealed his 2-1/2 year sentence.  Ouch.

Sound about right for those with money here. He doesn't appear to have shown any remorse, only argued for a lower sentence based on how "important" he is. A month in the monk-hood for each death shows how little the Thai elite value the lives of those less fortunate.

Anywhere else a vehicular manslaughter charge will get you good 10 years in the pokey, not in this country and not if you're well connected, i just hope that the parents of the poor kids will sue him in civil court and take him to the cleaners...

Been dragging on for a while now, 4 years, and the scumbag has yet to serve his sentence.  So, if justice was swift the sentence would have been served by now and the guy could get back to normal life....unlike the 2 uni kids he killed.

This just highlights the juvenile and self entitled attitudes of many in Thailand who will never take responsibility for their careless inconsideration of others. 

 

I'd bet that he [Mr. Jenphob Veeraporn] still doesn't believe this was his fault, i.e. it was just an accident and that he should be accountable.

 

It is good to read news of case which reached the headlines a while back - we rarely get to hear the results.

Unfortunately, the next news of a case which reached the headlines will be when Vorayuth Yoovidhaya (Red Bull heir) has passed his statute of limitations and walks free in September 2027 (he's half way there already).

He probably spent his "monkhood" at a posh Bangkok temple, reporting in for occasional sleepovers. 

Thai "prison", for the wealthy, is a different type of incarceration than what the little people experience.

There are no further appeals. The Supreme court is the court of final instance.

They will now, he is out of options. No Colin, you are wrong there. If ANY person can afford bail in the form of cash or a land title, they are allowed bail from the court of first instance, the court of appeal right up to the Supreme court. If they cannot afford bail, they are held on remand in prison until they have exhausted all appeals. That time is deducted from their sentence.

No, Thai prison is Thai prison, the only thing his wealth will buy him is a smaller cell, better sleeping conditions, better food and minions to do his washing. There are no seprate prisons for the wealthy, just an easier way of getting through it,

The REAL question becomes, will he even set foot inside a jail DESPITE what the newspapers have reported ? The media often print total nonsense because they know that it will float by unnoticed. I remember seeing a HEADLINE with accompanying photo of a guy with a jackhammer, saying "IT,S STARTED", in relation to the demolition of the west side buildings on Pattaya,s Walking Street several years ago. Six months later I went down to see how the work was progressing, and not one tile had been removed ! A quick photo session and that was it.
