With the current rules of a 14 day quarantine for non-thai, no bars, restaurants that can't serve an alcoholic drink and no night clubs they won't need to keep it discreet.  It will be non-existent.

Khun Prayut Chan O Cha has handled the COVID19 situation exceptionally well, the stringent measures put in place worked to ensure minimal to zero transmissions or infections occurred.

  • Ypur wife's income obviously doesn't depend on foreign tourism. My wife instead has 2 businesses, depending very much on foreign tourism and has a totally different opinion than yours. And me, too.

if this happens I will leave Thailand forever because it mean stay here and die from codiv 19 or leave

Don't know about you but I'd pay just about any price and jump through more hoops than shamu at sea world to get back

Ditto.

Already set myself up with everything (the last lot of everything) only to have flights cancelled from Australia March 25th.

I made Thailand my home, took a thai partner and her children, built a family home, even working there before retirement.

Should count for something when they decide to open up again.

(But this is Thailand).

Quarantine for non-thai?

Everyone entering the kingdom is quarantined.

Heh, can we triple charge you because you are deemed a "discreet tourist"? Let's stop this bloody nonsense and just open the country and let people get back to earning a livelihood.

I too had this prediction - I can't really criticise such a decision - Permitting quarantine entry of tourists from those nations with low numbers is the only viable compromise in attempting to keep Covid-19 levels low and kick-starting the vital tourist industry.

Unfortunately, this doesn't assist those of use from Western nations who are either outside of of Thailand *(unable to enter) at the moment or those Westerners currently in Thailand who need to travel for work.

I see a fairly turbulent 12 months ahead (perhaps longer) with regards to freedom of travel into Thailand with a great deal of inconsistency in policy and restrictions according to your passport.

japan - certainly not at this stage.

Would have thought Japan would have figured mainly because of its offer of free accommodation for travel there.

Planes have to travel both ways so some incentives would be needed to get Japanese to come to Thailand.

Thailand has already a list with countries of low risk.

China with Hong Kong and Macau
South Korea

maybe they will add

Taiwan
Australia
New Zealand
Vietnam

Europe and USA for sure not, they are still high risk areas and this probably will not change until we have a vaccine

What makes you think there will be a vaccine when they have been trying to find a vaccine for SARS for nearly 20 years? China is also in a second lockdown phase in a city outside of Wuhan so why are they low risk?

They might want to open all the beaches if they are opening for tourists???? Tourists want fun in the sun to????

Because they are going to be low risk no matter what.

Thailand just need to open the bars and have everything in bars heavily discounted say 50%: Japanese will flock back to Thailand as everything here would be peanuts compared to Tokyo.  .

Let the Japanese come or anybody for that matter.  Just curious that why the entry policy is decided by the people who do not suffer the consequences of no tourism industry in Thailand. Why not we have everyone vote on this issue.

Yes, ban life.

Life is too dangerous, it always ends deadly.

There are no lockdowns in China now.

The figures are 130 hospitalised, 236 quarantined and 1776 PUI. As of 3.56 this afternoon.

Uh? Which city??

You may be talking about Shulan, but it was 1 month ago (!) and already finished.

One criticism of such a decision would be that the numbers coming out of China seem specious. Look at the number of daily cases reported there via Worldmeter and tell me if you think that graph represents objective reporting or sudden stopping of reporting...

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/china/

At the end of February, they fell to zero and stayed there. Kind of like another country I've been thinking about recently.

[Cue those who deride those who ask questions.]

To have a graph look like that in the context of all the data seen elsewhere, in my mind, a reasonable question would be why is that happening that way? The repetitive answers (hot weather, Thai discipline with wearing masks and distancing, wonderful leadership, somtam, vitamin D) just don't seem compelling as explanations. Openness with testing capabilities and the process of confirming tests would settle those questions and make it easier to decide one way or the other.

Probably need to ask many countries as I'm sure some will have restrictions of where their citizens can go

Hmm....money first, money second.... etc

No fun in the sun at the beaches right now, its the monsoon season and those days of sun and no wind are few and far between.  Just saw the Sunday evening news and they were down at Baeng Saen beach and also in Chonburi, the weather was windy, and sky gray, however the Thais were in the water and grouped up on the chairs under the umbrellas.....

Let us open our businesses first & have a trial run with "locals only" first before thinking

about International travel by ANY airline

What is really disheartening for a country I considered has a heart, is no talk of all the expats stranded who are not looking at a leisurely trip at their own convenience, but are completely and utterly desperate to get back.

We are renting homes- paying double rents because of being stranded, others own homes, have lives, families and cannot come back.  But all I read daily is nothing about us.

Business people are being allowed back now with expensive quarantine.  But those of us in the middle - expat farangs, feel we have been ignored and discarded.  Like we are unwanted trash.  Maybe that is what we are?

It truly is saddening.  I really hope I am wrong and the true heart of the Thai people give us priority to get back before the eventual tourist swarms.

We are suffering.

It makes a lot of sense but it's also quite funny to see here on this forum how most guys IN Thailand want to keep tourists out for as long as possible. And the people outside want to get in as soon as possible.

I wonder if it is based on passport or residence.  I need to travel to Thailand in September/November, have a US passport for have been living in the Philippines.

If you look at TAT tourist numbers, the largest numbers are from ASEAN countries and other Asian countries, excluding China.  China is its own category alone and is number two.  All of Europe is lumped together and is third.  I think it makes perfect sense for Thailand to initially concentrate on Asia as tourism opens up once again, with possibly Australia and New Zealand thrown in.

Most of the Asian countries have had lower virus numbers and many of the tourists will be  enduring shorter plane rides wearing masks than those coming from the US or Europe.  And, it works both ways.  My partner and I will likely take a quick non-stop plane flight to, say, Vietnam but we won't be traveling 20 hours on two planes and enduring three airports to visit America right now.

Travel 'bubbles' are travel 'babble'.  Look at the situation that just recently happened when a repatriated Thai was nearly released from a 14-day quarantine and then tested positive.  Why is 14 days a magic number?  A reasonable guideline but it doesn't insure that we will be safe. With estimates that 35% of COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic, those countries that open tourism will open the gates to a resurgence of the virus. There are too many facets of this disease that we still don't understand. I don't care if the tourists are MICE or Macedonians, there should be a uniform approach for all tourists wanting to visit Thailand or any other country for that matter. Or for those Thais who want to travel and return without a whole lot of hassle.  Just remember, the first COVID-19 transmission in Thailand involved a taxi driver.  After tourism opens, the taxi drivers will be on the front line, again.  No system will be fool-proof or bribe-proof.

Yes, but research from Singapore was saying that the virus isn't infectious after the 11th day of the infection.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/most-covid-19-patients-not-infectious-after-11-days-study

"Earlier Tourism and Sports Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakan said that such talks might happen in the second half of this year."

My god, we are 23 days away from 2nd half of this year! At least, he apparently said "THIS year", unless that was said mistakenly and he meant 2021, 2022 or so.....
