Yes I remember January and early February but you make it sound like it lasted much longer. The whole of the Bight of Bangkok coastal area was affected by very light airs. A rare occasion for the time of year. There is not much agri land left to burn near Pattaya. The main problem were vehicle (diesel) emissions which rose and concentrated into a static haze. Bangkok was worse.

Hate is a strong word, don't hate Thailand at all, it just isn't for me, in other words, if your in a marriage and your not happy, would you stay in it for the sake of it, I know I wouldn't, so I am divorcing Thailand you could say, but taking the wife and the kids with me if that makes sense ????

There is no way in hell a child has the opportunities in Thailand then they do living in the west.not true. And the quality of life is nowhere near the west. Make all the excuses you want, not a chance anyone should be raising their children in Thailand.i don't see young families in the west lined up at immigration trying to get their families a Thai visa because it it THE place to raise a family.

My kids in Thailand are happy, going to university is a very reasonable price and they fully expect to earn enough money to buy their own homes after graduation.

My kids in the UK are unhappy and dissatisfied with their lives and prospects, have huge educational debts to repay, all the employment seems to be zero hour contracts, and they can only afford to live in rented accommodation.

My sons in the UK dare not marry or co-habit as they are likely to be asset stripped by their female partners.

 

I don't think the west is a great place for young people at all.

Although it might have been 40 years ago.

 

So many elderly expats looking back on their youth with nostalgia, if the west is such a great place today, why are you here?

Your sons are afraid to marry because they may be stripped of their assets? Thank god that would never happen in Asia. Seems funny not many young people in the west are flocking to Asia for a better life, nly older sexpats, and the vast majority of the home country bashing is from people in the UK, I have never been, but it's sad to hear people hate their home country so much. I never made the mistake of selling up back home, getting away from the winter is nice, butting getting back to Canada, is fabulous, giving up Canada for banana land????? Not a chance in hell. And viewing your previous posts, you're the one saying in hndsight you would have never bought in Asia, and would move in an instant if given the choice. But you're stuck there. Remember? Not such a nice place is it? Especially in Chang mai, air pollution and garbage, no thanks.

all my nieces nephews have graduated college and uni, no debt as my sisters have saved enough to pay for their schooling, all in their early 20s have great jobs, ex Ray tech at a hospital, Internet technician at a major company, all full time positions. Another just moved to Switzerland with her husband both working for a multinational firm repairing high 6 figures. 

Would they be in this position growing up in thailand?

sorry to hear about the UK, never been , no plans on going. Eastern Europe is on my bucket list though

So you say i am wrong in my believe that Thailand is better for my children to grow up than the UK,

I'm from the US and think it's a great place. I still own multiple homes in Ca. should I ever decide to return. 

 

You're confusing opportunity with pursuit of happiness. I have an 8 yr old daughter who attends an EP school where I think she's receiving a good education. In the states I'd be paying for a private school as well because of the <deleted> they teach in public schools. My kid with good English skills and graduate from top Thai University has a rosy future in Thailand with a good job. Here she has a large family in Isaan and we live 1 min from local beach in a fishing village. Life is good here. Of course a family in the US wouldn't up and move to Thailand for better opportunities, that's silly.

You can hold both places in your hearth? Im still found of my homecountry, and possible I move back when I feel to old to live in in Thailand if status q as now! This aint angood place to die, but maybe in future things is different. We will see, and therefor I not 100% giving up my mother country

I haven't been back to the UK for 50 years so I don't know what it's like now. I was once stopped for speeding at a checkpoint, the officer slid his clipboard through the window and said 200 Baht under his clipboard would solve the problem, I gave him the 200 and said don't spend it all at once, save some for later, he laughed and gave 100 back, for my baby son, he said, who was on his mothers lap. If I did that in Germany I would have been summoned for speeding, bribery, not having my son in a proper childs seat and get points on my license, yes all very correct and I would have deserved it, especially for the baby seat but I've never seen one to buy where I am, live is easy here.

OP, have you thought about what life back in Australia will actually look like ?

Would you still be retired, or forced back to work ?

60 year old and drawing down savings, whatever your monthly rent is here, will be your weekly rent there.

Have you purchased a trolley full of groceries, paid rent, paid utility bills, eaten out in Australia lately.

 

Not sure of your circumstances but the visa costs for wife and children will be a chunk of money, enough to pay your health insurance for 10 years.

I always find these topics funny, it's like everyone here seems to only think 2 dimensionaly, stay here or go back to western country....For me it was fun when I first came but this will be my final year...Portugal, Spain, Vietnam, Philippines...so many other interesting places to see that are far cheaper and a lot more fun. I do think the majority of people staying here are old and basically like the idea of purchasing young ladies..me i am not even 40 and in good shape so that does not bother me one bit as I can get girls anywhere in the world!

The horrendous air pollution is the straw that broke the camel's back for us, and it's only going to get worse! I understand that burning the fields lowers production costs and increases profits for middleman but who else does it actually benefit? Not the millions of peasants being exposed to unhealthy, hazardous, and toxic air 24/7 six months a year.

I have nowhere and nothing to go back to in the U.S.  My life is here and I enjoy it so far.  Life is for living, and I have much more easy living here on a daily basis.  

No car needed, no worries about high rent and food costs, companionship available wherever desired.   Example: went fishing the other day with friends, big wooden boat, fish all cooked up with rice and side dishes for all, swimming, drinking, lounging on the upper deck, enjoying the views and all for 700 baht.  In the U.S. it would cost that much just to park your car at the marina for a day and the trip would be at least 3000 baht per person.

It is not perfect here.. but cannot imagine going back to Europe with all what is going on there for years and getting worse every year (crimes, immigrants, robberies etc.. etc..)

Living here for 5 years in 2000, decided to leave in 2005 for some of the reasons you give.. Tried it in France, then went to South America and was happy to finally come back here 5 years ago.. exactly 10 years after I had left.. Even if things have changed during these 10 years and not in the best way, I still like it here more than anywhere else.. climate, good hospital facilities, lots of restaurants to choose from, easy and quiet life, good local food and reasonable cost of life.. enough for me, at least for now..
