In the past it was possible to send a link of a thread to an email address and in that way one could follow a thread but I didn't see that option anymore. Or is that still possible?

Top of the thread above the green "Reply to this topic" button should be a "Follow" box, click it for options.

The green "reply to this topic" I can see, but not the "follow" box. Is the box being described as "follow" box?

I just added a screenshot.

On a mobile browser it is at the bottom of the page.

I still cannot find a "follow" box at least not a box for "email following", also not at the bottom of the page.

I added a screenshot again.

On mine this is a rectangle with follow written on it. Try touching it.

You can also go to your notification settings to get a email for followed topics.

Look in "Notification settings", no idea where it is on the mobile site I'm afraid.

This is white if not followed - black if followed on my computer and you have full set of options when clicking on it - very good feature to both follow and remove yourself if goes bad.
