Princeton to drop Woodrow Wilson's name from school

The ironic thing is that millions of American people are now learning, for the first time, about all these actors in the backwaters of American history whose statues, ignored for more than 100 years, are now found worthy of destruction..

And I laugh in particular at the hypocrisy of these nincompoops in charge of the nation's leading universities suddenly finding AFTER 100 YEARS that good ol' Woodrow was not quite the brilliant chap we thought he was.

BULLSH!T, thy name is Princeton (Yale, Harvard, Berkeley etc etc etc etc etc).

Like the owners of L'Oréal.  No longer will the words Whitening be labeled on the products they sell.  What will all of the Asean countries women do now.  They buy these creams and items because they were labeled as Whitening...This has gone to far.  Maybe the dark spot correction creams will have to go as well

Just let the lunatics take over the farm.  While they are at it, Why not relinquish the lands all taken from the Indians and after the original 13 colonies were formed.  All those whose ancestors were slaves will need to return to the country of their ancestors origination as they were brought to the US Illegally. Return California, and Texas back to Spain and Mexico.  Give back New Orleans and the Louisiana purchase Area to the French, and of course Give Hawaii back to the actual Hawaiians and all others need to vacate.  Lots more to do to fix all the perceived wrongs, but then they do not want to be inconvenienced they just want to be satiated and given things like money.  But then I may be totally ignorant of the issues.  That is just the US, so lets start with all the colonization by the French, Spaniards and the British.  Give it all back and eliminate any issues.  In Asia, Thailand needs to go back to being Siam.  China needs to give back lands taken by Genghis Kahn and the Mongols.  Russia should return to what it was in the time of the Czar's.  Pretty sure I missed alot......all of this is being said with sarcasm dripping from my fingertips.

Goodness!  I am overwhelmed.

You propose reversing history. This isn't about that. It's about undoing certain commemorations.

This about reversing decades of societal racism embedded through government and corporate institutions.

And what about laser teeth whitening for Christ sake?

Are we supposed to live with stained/yellowed teeth?

Unbearable!

Burn the books, tear down the statues, rename the streets, parks and buildings. Ban certain names to be bestowed upon the newborn; rewrite what has been written and ignore the lessons of the past, only to relive the horrors long forgotten.

How is "history" "obliterated" by renaming a college at a University? Do you learn history from reading the inscription on a building or a statue? Or by reading a book?

There are quite few good biographies on Wilson.

He grew up in the South, so perhaps understandable why he was a racist?

He gets a plus for Suffrage, maybe a huge minus for his handling of the 1918/19 flu?

Yeah, only the current mindset doesn't do the plus vs. minus thing when it comes to historical figures who's statues are being taken down etc. More like, one strike, it's out. If the bio includes something not in line with new creed, that's it. There's no discussion, no learning, no balance.

This must be very difficult for our Fox watching trailer park boys that a school they would never make it into is changing its name.

I am offended by the trailer park reference to fox watchers. That's right whites feelings aren't considered.

Perhaps we need some affirmative action programs for the poor whites.

People spending a lot of time on statues and being offended.  Get over it and put your time and energy into what really matters ... power.  Start insisting that blacks be on company boards - boycott companies that don’t agree, strategically vote as a block to assure a disproportionate number of blacks are in political office, buy/deal with black owned businesses only etc. What is going on now changes nothing.  Where are the black leaders a power grab movement like this demands?   You have my sympathy now give me a reason to respect you as well.

John Wayne Airport in LA is having name changed and there's an Abraham Lincoln Statue being removed.

Well Lincoln was a racist even by the standards of the day and never had any intnetion of abolishing slavery at the start of the war, only containing it and preserving the Union. He stated blacks were inferior and did not want them to get the vote, hold office of marry whites. No statues CSA or Union should be touched without a public vote in the areas where they are, otherwise it's mob rule or mayors being blackmailed with being labeled racist if they do nothing-oh can we still say blackmailed?

Well to my way of thinking there are different classes of historical monuments. The vast majority of statues raised to Confederate generals and politicians were actually part of a revisionist movement  to rewrite and glorify the Confederate cause. At the time of the war everyone  knew the war was about slavery. It was only decades afterwards that revisionist historians began to rewrite that history. So those statues should go.

So should the commemoration of Woodrow Wilson. He actually instituted regressive measures that badly hurt African Americans. He was behind the times. No good excuse for that.

On the other hand there are people of their time like Jefferson and Washington, who were slaveholders but not militant on its behalf. In fact, Washington had his slaves freed upon his death and Jefferson would have done so but for his debts. Both at least acknowledged that it was an evil.

That's strange when you say everyone knew the civil war was about slavery, it seems niether Jefferson Davis, nor Lincoln agreed with you. Davis said it was about freedom from tyrany of course and this is what lincoln said a few weeks before he raised 75k men to invade the south. He was a good speaker, but an even better liar and hypocrite, he had no intention of ending slavery only containing it.

Punishment?

Who exactly is being punished here?

Nothing is being assuaged, but hopefully a name will be chosen that celebrates those who promoted inclusivity not segregation.

Maybe. But  to  expunge reference for the reason of a transition  to genuine humanitarian inclusivity ?

How  to institute  an acceptable new  ideology devoid of  historic references both negative and positive?

The impossibility  of expunging and  eliminating the existing  elements and  examples of   mindset and opinions  of that which is rightfully deemed  no longer acceptable  is the  basic  problem .

The populist  rejection  combined  with the  disengenuous  political  spin doctoring  has  regularly  occurred about  every other  decade  without   genuine  resolution.

IMO  it would  be better to  retain the  historical  points  of  reference to the  glaring examples  of  inhumanity  to  humanity than to  sweep it away.

Should historical  literature next be  burned in an attempt  to  eliminate the  records? Historically that has been attempted  but residual evidences often surface to  renew debate, accountibililty and for politically  motivated reason both  condemnation and  applause.

My personal interpretation  of the current ructions  that have incrementally  spread around the  world  to some degree is that it has already been corrupted from a  genuine  specific cause  into a catalystic  form of  systemic  rejection.

Why black, and not native Americans or Hispanic Americans, for example?

And shouldn't these positions result from merit and competence rather than from skin color?

What you are advocating is seen in totalitarian regimes, such as in China, where access to certain levels of responsibility requires to be a member of the communist party, never mind if there are more competent candidates available.

I’m sorry but where does it mention expunge reference to Wilson? They are renaming a building not rewriting history. He’ll still be in the history books for those who wish to study him.

Stop this stupid movement to destroy history right now. Dumbastheycome, that was well written old mate but a little long winded.

I say we go and kick China in the knackers, that should sort out the boys from the toy boys. That includes the Ladies of the world, of course. Seems that these days they are being bred just as dumb as males.

Why stop there? Perhaps we should go back to before the birth of the Roman Empire as they were doing land grabs for centuries. Let's restructure all borders in Europe.

Nothing like the smell of moral indignation. There is something happening about the sacred shibboleths of the USA and the rest of the world. Wake up to it, things are going to change. And belly aching about it is just boring and old fart moaning.
