Pattani launched its Puangmanee durian season today with promotions designed to lure the lucrative Chinese market’s hunger for this unique variety of the pungent fruit.

Pattani Governor Kraisorn Visitwong presided over the opening of the durian festival on July 2. After revealing this season’s festival motto – “Great durian, Puangmanee of Yarang district, the jewel of Pattani river basin” – he thanked visitors and participants, before overseeing a durian charity auction which yielded Bt9,000 to be donated to a local foster home.

Puangmanee durian is a small-sized variety weighing 1.3-1.8 kilos when ripe. Its flesh is smooth and creamy, but not too sweet, with a smell that is not as pungent as larger durian varieties.

Kraisorn said that farmers in the southern provinces are trying to meet Asean Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) standards in order to boost the market for native durian, rambutan, mangosteen, southern langsat, and pomelo. China had also shown interest in importing Thai Puangmanee durian, he added. He hopes the fruit will help boost both local farming and tourism incomes.

Maybe someone can give me some insight on Pattani, and the 3 southern provinces of the deep south, but I was told by someone on good authority whose lived, and traveled all over Thailand over the course of 12 years, and speaks fluent Thai(even though that's not relevant in this post) that Pattani was the only province of the 3 muslim provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, and of course the afformentioned that was not safe for foreigners, even in Muaeng district. I seriously doubt the Pattani tourist authority has mentioned anything about the strife going on down there. I've seen travel brochures that show Pattani to be a splendid, beautiful place with fishing villages etc, but not sure after what my friend told me if I'd want to go down there to look around. Perhaps if I went to a Durian plantation that was set up for me to eat Durian all day it'd be alright, but not to wonder about.

Do you know you could charge the battery of your handphone with a durian? I read about it but I need someone to confirm it.

Is it safe to eat durian in the south? What about durians dropping on your head while you were admiring those beautiful insects on the forest floor.

I think the South is beautiful. It's not foreigners who are the targets but can be collateral damage. Patani needs political, cultural and religious autonomy but the generals won't give an inch (as usual).

Living in Narathiwat I can safely say the deep south is not what people make it out to be. I have never heard of Pattani being less safe than the other provinces either.
