Tents, chairs and other facilities were set up in the football field of Songkhla’s Chanawittaya School to be used for a public hearing on the Chana industrial estate project on Saturday (July 11).

 

 

 

Officials have also set up a Covid-19 screening checkpoint at the school’s entrance and secured the school complex with a barbed wire fence.

A helicopter deployed by the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 will observe the proceedings to prevent incidents as the project is facing a lot of opposition.

I can imagine that there will be a lot of opposition, especially when one looks at the facts, what happens upon the completion of the project.

 

Roughly 20.000 tons of coal will be unloaded from ships in the deep-water port into wagons per day! Then these 200 wagons will be transported from the port to the Thepha 2.200 MW power plant, unloaded and burned there, creating more emissions, particles and CO2. Besides more heavy industries will settle there.

The environmental impact is huge. The amount of coal dust produced will cause respiratory problems and a particle pollution in an unprecedented scale.

 

The marine life in this area, now the livelihood for its inhabitants, will be destroyed. Chana and Thepa will surely lose their charm as a holiday destination with their pristine beaches and local coulor.

 

The project will kill more jobs, than it creates, and support an energy policy which should be phased out instead promoted. This project is aimed to produce huge profits for the EGAT and other big players involved, but surely not to improve the quality of life in the area, or reduce the CO2 emissions of Thailand.

Both districts have a long coastline, and is therefore predestined for small wind power units, on- and offshore. Sun is there in abundance. Solar collectors (thermo and photovoltaic) could cover the roofs of almost every house, a feeding compensation could be paid for overhead electricity produced. This model could be promoted and used all over Thailand, thus making dirty power plants redundant.

 

But GREED rules in Thailand not prudence and common sense. Decentralized energy production is a red rag for the EGAT, therefore the opposition will be lied to and oppressed.

Put them around the glowing tons of gold in the temples and you would not need to put them on the roofs

I wonder where the coal is coming from - Australia or elsewhere:-
