Nearly one-third of tourism-related businesses 'may shut down permanently'

While 1/3 of current businesses may shut, they will be replaced by either the same people with a “new” concept or with the next line of fledgling entrepreneurs. 
 

There is not a lot of operating capital for these businesses, it’s mostly manpower so they’ll just cancel their business license and get a new one and start anew.

A sensible comment, which stands out in the midst of a load of meaningless rant of frustrated individuals who are unable to see or accept that Thailand will merrily go ahead without western tourism and that white foreigners so far have enjoyed a status which owed its importance to the economic power they had, rather than to their own merits. Now that this economic power is faltering, farangs react shouting out that Thais don't know what they are doing, whilst it seems that for centuries they have managed well to sit between China and the West making the most out of it.

Admittedly the average quality of the answers to this post is above the usual average, but still this answer hits the point: many will suffer now and a new economy will emerge, perhaps based on tourism, perhaps not.

Much of 'Farangland' has been devastated economically by the corona virus. Many jobs will be lost there too and many countries have borrowed so much that 'somehow' it will have to be paid for -- possibly by taxation.

 

Eventually tourists will return to Thailand but high flight costs, the high Baht, high prices on beer, spirits, wine, and tobacco will deter some. Many that do may not have the same disposable income to throw around.

you might consider googling "travel health insurance" and then contact a carrier or agent.  short-term travel insurance with covid19 cover is available now for less'n US$50 for 2-3 weeks.  can easily be included in the price of a zero-dollar package tour along with covid19 testing.

 

and even after the flu magically disappears over the summer, thailand should keep the requirement for health insurance for tourists to reduce the number of unpaid hospital bills and gofundme begging campaigns.

I am not surprised about this as many places are very badly run. I have seen a good number that continue to display the standard sign

It came from your wonderful benefactors to the North,  The CCP lobbied their lap dog, the WHO  and got the disease  named  COVID 19. Covid-19 appears to have mutated into a very weak virus, spreads easier but much less deadly..............probably now Flu is more deadly than Covid-19.  Tuberculosis kills 2 MILLION people every year, and thats with vaccine available...........nobody is worried about that.  Covid does 500 thousand and its panic stations........ Like SARS in 2003...........virus naturally mutate to become weaker and weaker in order to survive, they cannot kill the host too much, or they die too as no hosts left to spread it.

Many businesses here open and close....you see the sign for soft opening, followed by Grand Opening followed by a closed up shop, in rapid succession. If tourists come back the shops and businesses will open up again with new proprietors. No big deal. Better a good business for 60% than a poor business for the 100%.

and still hardly any noise from the tourism industry and no pressure put on the PM to open up the borders,so they're not helping themselves.   why are they so quiet?   i think they are genuinely very scared of the virus. which is ridiculous as they are more likely to end up in hospital because of a dog bite than the virus.   so there ya go Thais aren't all about money as we thought????

Probably many emergency situations. When I had a heart attack the orderlies carried me into the emrgency exam room. After less than 2 mins  Dr. says sign here your heart stopping we have to operate.

Vibhavadi Hospital--- afterwards they called my insurance provider and were told they would cover all costs. Still were not going to let me leave (they can't legally do that) so my Thai sis-in-law put on her charge card.  After about a week my insurance compny deposited check into my US bank account and I paid her back.

sure, as expected elderly travelers will pay more.  75 year old american from california, traveling to thailand in september.  $60/week, includes emergency evacuation and various trip-related coverages.  (a sprightly 50 year old pays $22/week)

 

unpaid bills confuses me as well, like who travels to a foreign country without adequate insurance?  but you're welcome to search the threads for news articles referencing foreigners unpaid bills, and the many, many gofundme links.

 

point is, mandatory insurance and/or covid19 testing are reasonable requirements, and not terribly expensive when considering the total cost of a vacation package.  what's holding back tourism is the 14-day quarantine requirements, as well as certain nations failing to adequately respond to the virus.

Exactly what ‘impact’ are they talking about... 58 dead who were probaby on death doors anyways from the annual corona virus or flu as its known... giving it a buzz word was crackers.... The Thai Government have collapsed their entire economy over the flu (as have many other governments), but here they offer a big fat zero support package!  The UK to date have pumped 192 Billion pounds... Thailand offer 5k Bhat to only a select few... pathetic... Well the gold reserves are going to run out soon and the Bhat will collapse with significant inflation... then Thailand will be reverted to -100 years plus... everyone is in debt here more than any other Country in SE Asia.  ... its going to get very very messy soon... Shutting down of businesses will result to unemployment for ordinary people, a sad reality. The self sufficient country has great advantage in this current situation. Prepare for the worst and make some remedies to lighten the burden, I think that is the best thing to do.

When tourism returns yes travel related business will open up, problem is presently there aren't enough availble jobs for those that are out of work due to the closed shops.

My sympathy goes to those Business,s that are what I consider to be the genuine tourist type of Business Eg a small Restaurant.

The large ~ built for purpose ~ Business,s Eg the likes of The Floating Market, Frost Land Etc, whos only aim is to shamelessly gouge Money from people on their Vacation can sink out of sight with no sympathy at all from me.

And good riddance, as these are the Business,s that have really helped to ruin Thailands reputation
