Thai fence said to prevent illegal crossing

Battambang and Banteay Meanchey provincial police say Thailand is not invading Cambodia after a series of social media posts about fences being built on the border raised alarms.

Banteay Meanchey police chief Ath Khem said on Tuesday the information on social media on Sunday and Monday was not true. The fences were erected on land far away from the border and did not affect Cambodia.

The Thailand side erected the fences on its land along national roads and at some corridors to block people from going in and out illegally.

Do most Thai people agree to the use of a barbwire fence to protect its borders from illegal immigration? Was this planned before coronavirus or his response to it?

How do you Cambodian people feel about a fence between the two countries?

I’m not sure if liberal Americans are against protecting United States borders or just fight anything that President Trump wants.

There have been fences and barricades all along the Thai/Cambodian border for many many years, they are two separate countries and there needs to be some form of line of demarcation. During the last days of the Khmer Rouge, the Cambodian army pushed the rebels back as far as the fence and we all watched as the two sides fought it out on TV. If that fence hadn't been there the rebels would have fallen back into Thai territory and the fight would have continued there and that would have involved the Thai army and a much bigger battle.

So yes, the Thai people did agree to that fence, not least of all because it confirmed where Thailand started and stopped and where they could live, something that has been a problem for many years as borders have moved.

The country that benefits the most from the fence is likely the country that will pay for the fence.

It is ridiculous to think a country will agree to pay for a fence unless it is beneficial to them(maybe wishful thinking - but unlikely)

If Thailand feels a fence between them and Cambodia is necessary, imagine the need of a fence between America and Mexico.

I'm from the UK, we have a 22+ mile DITCH and it doesn't stop the bugg ers.  A fence or wall isn't going to do much.

And a  bloody  great wall to the north...

It does seem in some places in the world, some borders are a little contentious. India/Pakistan, India/China, etc. Good to have them agreed and properly marked. We're lucky we have the English Channel, North Sea and Irish Sea as part of a clearly defined border...

Just mine the border (again)

Unfortunately, parts of the remote forest and rural areas along the Thai border are already mined, sadly killing and injuring Cambodian people to this day!
