WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House and Donald Trump's campaign on Sunday sought to shut down the Republican president's musings on delaying the 2020 vote, saying there will be an election on Nov. 3.

 

White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Trump was raising concerns about mail-in ballots when he floated the idea of delaying the U.S. vote.

"We're going to hold an election on November 3 and the president is going to win," Meadows said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

 

Presidential campaign adviser Jason Miller echoed the sentiment on "Fox News Sunday," saying, "The election is going to be on November 3rd and President Trump wants the election to be on November 3rd."

 

Trump on Thursday suggested delaying the U.S. elections, an idea immediately rejected by both Democrats and his fellow Republicans in Congress - the sole branch of government with the authority to make such a change.

 

Critics and even Trump's allies dismissed the notion as an unserious attempt to distract from devastating economic news, but some legal experts warned that his repeated attacks could undermine his supporters' faith in the election process.

 

The Republican president has been trying to undermine confidence in mail-in balloting, claiming repeatedly and without evidence that it would lead to widespread voter fraud.

 

Meadows took up his boss's cause on Sunday, warning that mail-in ballots must be handled properly without providing evidence that they have not been in the past.

 

The White House and Donald Trump's campaign on Sunday sought to shut down the Republican president's musings on delaying the 2020 vote, saying there will be an election on Nov. 3.

 

Asked if it were irresponsible for Trump to float the idea, Meadows skirted the question, saying "It is responsible for him to say that if we try to go to 100% universal mail-in ballots, will we have an election result on November 3? Now I would suggest we wouldn't even have it on January 1."

 

Republican Governor Asa Hutchinson told CNN on Sunday the election should be held on time and it was up to states to ensure balloting be carried out properly.

 

"It's not helpful for the president to think out loud in a public fashion and express some frustration," he added.

 

The coronavirus crisis is expected to drive a surge in mail voting in November. State election officials are working to ensure tens of millions of ballots can reach voters in time to be cast and are returned in time to be counted.

 

Miller criticized efforts by states including Nevada for moving toward expanding mail-in balloting during emergencies like the coronavirus epidemic, as well as other states that will count ballots postmarked Nov. 3 that arrive after Election Day.

 

Trump early Sunday called for a lawsuit to be filed to counter Nevada's legislative efforts to extend mail-in balloting. "This is outrageous. Must be met with immediate litigation!," he said in a Twitter post.

Of course Trump can not change election dates.  It isn't in the powers of the presidency.  And he knows it.  Sadly many didn't consider a part of the concern voiced because they just want to hate on anything Trump says or does.  

 

We do not have the system in place to count that many mail in ballots.  It isn't crazy train to think this might be the most screwed up election in US history with counts and recounts into December and tensions rising as both sides claim victory.

 

It doesn't matter if you don't believe there will be shenanigans.  Fair enough.  But if you actually believe mail in ballots can be counted properly after some of the primary issues and the hanging chads in Florida debacle I don't know what else to say.  

 

We are able to do most things in life via masks and social distancing.  We can certainly vote in person also.  Clean up mail in voting over the next few elections with trials and prove smooth operations before allowing it in a real presidential election.

Nobody has ever claimed or proven the democrats have cheated by any means the same cannot be said about Trump and the republicans all mail in cheating discovered in the past has been by republican voters.

The bigger issue is ‘voter suppression’.

Going back 20 years and covering the entire country, one can assume that over a billion votes were cast in primary and general elections, and only 1071 cases of voter fraud.  That's about 0.0001% of votes. 

 

The system isn't perfect, but it's working pretty well.

 

Thank you for pointing out there were convictions.  It's a reminder to people that if they vote illegally, the vote itself provides documented evidence that they committed a crime.  Perhaps that's why voter fraud is so rare.

i don't see the problem.  weren't we complaining last election that electronic voting machines were a vast conspiracy to steal the elections?  well, now we've got a paper trail for 100% audits.

 

and it's not like the usps gotta deliver 70 million ballots to dc all on a single day.  these are thousands of local elections, right, that get tallied into districts and then states.  mail-in can start weeks ahead of election day. 

 

if the mail-in ballots are anything like the absentee ballots us expats get (mine from texas comes via email, i print the ballot and the envelope and mail it in), there won't be any hanging chads or butterflies.

Once again you are trying to portray something in a way your evidence does not support. You claim, or at least insinuate, without a shred of supporting evidence, that these voter fraud cases were all conducted by the "opposition," with their dirty tricks. You try to suggest that Republicans would never do this, while the Democrats are falling over themselves to commit fraud. Rubbish. Until you can show otherwise, any sensible person will take it that the offences were split somewhere close to 50/50.

Voter fraud is unbelievably tiny, even the 1,071 against billions of votes cast in the period covered, so to bang the drum that this year millions upon millions of fraudulent votes will be cast, again without any evidence, does tend to make your statements wholly without substance. Again!

I add, one of the cases your link shows is in a Republican primary, for vote buying, and which included among a whole bunch of people, the Sheriff and the Judge. Fine upstanding Republicans though right?

He's been doing a bang-up job of that (directly) since he moved into the WH and now the U.S. is the laughing stock of the world.

How so may I ask when the Republicans are rushing out quickly to clean up his 'expletive'. Even the Pentagon got worked up and going through war games planning for fear of delay or Trump's refusal to accept the election results. Meanwhile the Dems not taking the bait and have been rather restraint to another Trump's overt self destruction.

My official request for a U.S. Absentee Ballot was mailed June 27, 2020 from a Thailand Post Office by EMS Mail EE181166561TH. The letter finally reached US Customs July 20, 2020 where the tracking says it is still being “processed”. The question is raised as to why this official voting request by a US citizen is being delayed? I ask anyone to forward this information to anyone in authority to notify of the problem. Is it an isolated issue or is this a systemic issue, further, what are the reasons for the delay within the a United States Postal System? Feel free to cite my name for this purpose.

1071 looks impressive but it's over 37 years, and for all types of elections incl. local, primary, etc... So that's 29 cases per year. Around 20% of them are related to absentee ballot, so it's about 6 absentee ballot cases per year, each of them usually involving less than 10 votes. As there are 500,000+ elected positions in the US, That's peanuts.

More likely a problem with the Thai mail system than the US mail.  A few years ago I had one absentee ballot for a primary election arrive months after I requested it, on election day. It was useless at that point.

June 27 was the mailing date in Thailand. I agree, Thaipost was responsible until July 20, when the mail was tracked by both the Thaipost and the United States Postal Service as the mail being in the hands of the US system. Why it is being, "processed" by US Customs, Chicago is a mystery but it has stalled there with no onward progress since July 20 (as of this morning Aug. 3 here in Thailand).
