Protesters keep eagle eye out for celebs who supported 2014 coup

Thai actress Daraneenute “Top” Pasutanavin became the latest target of online attack after her 2014 Instagram post supporting the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) protest resurfaced on Wednesday (August 26).

 

The PDRC protest against a blanket amnesty bill led to a military coup and the ousting of Yingluck Shinawatra’s government. 

 

Daraneenute is the third celebrity to be caught in the cyberspace war. 

 

The other two were Pawanrat “Miew” Naksuriya and Ornapa “Ma” Krisadee, a transgender TV personality. Both of them were co-hosts of the TV show “Khao Sai Khai” aired on Thairath TV.

 

Celebrities came under the spotlight after Ornapa posted a vulgar message attacking student protesters, saying: “Keep playing with your [expletive] at home. Don't go to school, you demon kids.” 

 

Angered by her comment, netizens launched a boycott campaign against Ornapa and she was forced to give up her job in two TV shows. 

 

The next person to come under fire was Pawanrat, whose clip mocking victims of the “popcorn gunman” Vivat Yodprasit, who targeted red-shirt protesters at Bangkok’s Laksi intersection in 2014, resurfaced. 

 

Netizens have launched boycott campaigns against celebrities who allegedly supported the 2014 military-led coup and it is believed that more will be targeted.

It's a start, the media is "paid" to drive the agenda and indoctrinate the masses, if you need an example start with CNN & the BBC

Why are TV stars used for marketing campaigns it is because they are social persuaders. They are useful for propaganda. They should keep out of politics or suffer the consequences for taking political sides.

Good, i hope they keep up the pressure on celebrities that endorse the illegal coup and subsequent amnesty.

Well, coup did stop the daily killings. At least for those living in Bangkok...

Not saying anything about years that followed, just commenting on situation just before the coup.

The current government, who came to power in a coup and robbed the country of that shred of democracy, it once had!?

And if people were supporting the coup and what followed, even more so by causally mentioning the coup- opponents should have been shot...one might say, they had it coming!

They just want the people who were elected a couple of years ago ( you remember, the election who's results took a couple of months to " count and interpret/adjust") to actually be allowed to function in parliament, as a viable opposition, rather than be disqualified on a variety of charges which redefine the concept of "trumped up"; in much the same way that your remarkably naive offering redefines the phrase "reds under the bed"!

The toadies are usually brave while the bully stands behind them.  Should the bully disappear - the playground remembers.

Huh? How about FFP and Thanathorn and everything that was stolen away from them that they voted for an actually won. How about what they don't believe in anymore as respect for those days are gone, but is seriously Taboo to talk negative about. How about freedom of speech and not having to bow down to every elite or cower or be intimidated or suppressed? How about everything this regime stands for, these kids, young adults and other brain functioning free thinking Thai are totally against. This is surely heating up and it is interesting of them taking out the TV elite fatheads. 

 

I think everyone needs to understand that this is not Thailand thousand or hundreds of years ago. This is now and they want  their free world to run as they need f or their futures, not the regime, the elite or the something else.. China is a lost cause dung hole that need to be seriously slapped and put back to silent and weak, but at least here is still salvageable if they do something about it..

Well ... seeing that two have been fired and food panda and others are reconsidering the partnership with minor food group, a supporter of the Junta, I'd say it is having some positive affect. Money talks and if advertisers start to pull the money from shows, and people stop eating pizza comapny folks will start to listen. For a reference see also any number of American idiots, shows, and businesses who've run afowl of the boycotters. 

I wonder how many protesters experienced the last two Thai coups in 2006 and 2014 and the 2010 red-shirt demonstrations as adults, or at least interested teenagers.

It was all about Thaksin and the coups happened because he was so greedy and wanted more and more power.

I am sure many Thais didn't really like the idea of a coup but for many at that time it was the smaller problem.

The big problem Thaksin was exchanged with the smaller problem military government.

Was that good? No. But for many it was a lot better than Thaksin.

Unfortunately the reporting about those events, i.e. at the BBC, was bad. And obviously Thaksin tried to bend history as much as he could.

I wonder how many of the current protesters know the history of what really happened.

Personally I don't care about celebrities. But lets be fair here. Looking back and saying something like "a coup is always bad" does not really cover the whole picture in Thailand...

The cycle of coups is entirely a result of the hierarchy fearing any lessening of the reins of power. They have vested interests in keeping the country and the poor ignorant

 

The 'but, but Thaksin' argument is just deflection as whether you accept it or not he was voted into power by the people in the closest thing to a fair election LoS has managed not once but twice

 

The man was for all his faults voted in and is still supported by a large number of the population, it is just as easy to see the way the yellows and the military manipulated stuff behind the scenes to get him and his sister out

 

Does anybody truly think Thailand is a fairer less corrupt happier place than when Pinocchio and his little green men committed treason?

It's always been about power not corruption it's New Power vs Old Power there's always going to be corruption no matter who's in charge but...

one big difference is only democratically elected governments get punished the worst what happens when this lot gets caught is they're transferred to inactive posts for a while.
On topic Celebrities and Brands previously got involved Politics and they were rewarded and now they should face the backlash.

It's a good idea, because these so -called celebs are the backroom spokespersons of the government propaganda machine. They get to air their views openly on TV and social media without being touched, while students are being harassed, arrested for doing the same.

Time to level the playing field, and the students know exactly how to play the game on social media, turn it back on the celebs.
