Asia offers more flu shots to head off COVID-19 complications

TOKYO/SEOUL/BEIJING (Reuters) - Some Asian countries are rolling out early and more aggressive influenza vaccination programs this year, seeking to reduce the potential of people contracting the flu and COVID-19 simultaneously, crippling healthcare systems.

 

With a second or third wave of the coronavirus pandemic looming for many countries, tackling this year's flu season - typically December through February - has taken on increased urgency.

 

In Japan, the health ministry is preparing 31.2 million flu shots, up 7% from last year and the highest amount since 2015. Officials are also urging symptomatic patients to call medical hotlines before going for testing to avoid contagion at hospitals.

 

"We are going to focus our medical resources on the severely ill in anticipation of the seasonal influenza epidemic," Takeshi Enami, a Japanese health ministry official said last week after a meeting of disease experts.

 

The World Health Organization has urged global widespread flu vaccinations this year, amid concerns the same people who are most vulnerable to risks from COVID-19, such as the elderly and those with respiratory conditions, are also at greatest risk for the flu.

 

Data on the number of annual flu cases across Asia is limited, although Japan had about 12 million cases in the 2018/19 season, according to an official source.

 

In South Korea, health authorities are procuring 30 million flu vaccines for the winter season, up 20% from last year. Around 19 million people will be inoculated for free, covering a third of the country's population, up from 13.8 million a year ago.

 

Officials are also extending the demographic window for free vaccination, this year covering children from six months to 18, adults over 61 and pregnant women.

 

South Korea's biggest flu vaccine maker GC Pharma told Reuters it will make over 10 million flu shots for this season, up from the 8.5 million doses last year.

 

In Taiwan, the government said it views the seasonal flu and the coronavirus as two separate concerns as they can control COVID-19 with existing strict rules, including mandatory quarantines. Officials said late last month they planned to provide more than six million free doses this year.

 

In China, where flu shots are typically not free, some local authorities have reported a surge in demand. Disease prevention authorities in the Changning district of Shanghai city told local media they expect demand for flu vaccines in the autumn and winter to increase some 50% from previous years.

 

In Australia, where the flu season runs roughly from June to September, officials procured 16.5 million flu shots, up from 13.2 million last year.

 

The moves in Asia echo similar efforts in North America and Europe. In the United States, pharmaceutical firms are expected to provide around 200 million flu vaccines this year, about 20% more than usual.

I thought the article was pretty clear and in no way suggests that the Flu vaccine works against Covid19,,,,,, the BS virus (as you call it) that has killed close to a million people

I'm interested to know how the flu will be of any consequence this year.

How will it spread given all the covid precautions. Logically the flu will have trouble spreading if the population is in some level of isolation, distancing, masks etc.

Given that anyone going from country to country, continent to continent is a small number, subject to health checks, quarantine etc.

How will the flu get from country to country ???

I heard from someone that elderly Thai, above 50, enrolled in Social Security Fund, can get a free flew vaccination starting October 15

Would that be valid for foreigners enrolled in SSF as well???

Sharp is probably upset about the draconian dictatorial rules and regulations and in some countries even police state tactics used against people because of this Virus from “you know where”. 
    I understand his feelings if that’s the case. Governments, once they’ve gotten a much larger taste of more power, tend to be very reluctant to surrender those new heavy handed powers.

“Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” as Lord Acton stated.

We are moving towards more of fascist/communist system in much of the west and some other counties. 
  If you surrender your individual freedom and personal responsibility to a government that promises to take care of you, you will lose your individual freedom and personal responsibility, the government will oppress you and make you its property, and the government will only take care of itself.
   Think “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley, and “1984” by George Orwell.

  And think the end of individual freedom, and existing in a state with draconian dictatorial laws and regulations controlling all aspects of your life and the lives of your loved ones, from the cradle to the grave.

Throughout history people have handed over their freedoms to governments for the promise of safety.  It’s of course a fools errand.  Government can’t and won’t protect their citizens.  The goal of government is simply to stay in power to keep their snout in the trough

And most of this countries you talking about, they have freedom to a surten aspect, infrastructure, healthcare, and schools so people can use their scills and do something about their life. 

 

Thailand the world best dictature. Just take a good look at the Neighbouring countries now and before? 

 

My country have for sure served their people well, still people are not happy. Mistrust everything they do, and angry because they have to pay tax, and they try to protect their people from a virus, they for sure do not have any controll over, or still know enough about how to handle correct. But some social media experts, know exactly what should be done, and are willing to take responsibillity for millions of people. Impressive, bravo
