Protesters defy Thammasat ban and surge into football field for mega pro-democracy rally

Historically Thailand has been in similar positions before, without any historical perspective one is unlikely to understand the situation fully. Consider why the constitution is always being argued over.

Masks? That's what political scholars take away from this? As these situations can end up with shooting I somewhat doubt these students are prioritizing masks. ????

  • A bit like the B.T.S., and other public transport, the difference being, one is in a safer open air environment. Not seen any 'reported' spikes from the B.T.S. carriages, with people crammed in l

  • Good luck to the protesters who have braved the rain.  Really hope they can achieve something. Imagine how many more might have been there had it not been for the weather disrupting travel.

Come on ... you're esteemed PC-O has said there is no Covid in Thailand apart from those in quarantine so how can we see a spike of something that isn't actually there. I guess if we do see a spike then his lies will be there for all to see ... oh so there is still Covid in Thailand!!!

The struggle for freedom does not come cheap. If you have ever served, perhaps you may understand.

Hmm...

And once again history repeats itself. Soon time for the next military coup, I guess....

I don't know, I think if they had made me sit in the rain overnight and promised me I could watch a new Ratsadorn plaque, and then ordered me to go home, it's all over - I wouldn't be happy.

This is like a Suthep whistle rally in more ways than one. "This week is the last big rally where we emerge victorious over the vicious government." Oh, did I say "this week"? Oh, I meant the next rally after this one".

Peaceful rallies without ANY adult participation are useless fluff. The question is who's going to throw the first rock or fire the first round, and THEN we're in revolution times, maybe. This rally had no housewives, no actors and singers, no politicians, no defectors from the government, no business people. A few academics watched on TV and then bloviated, giving the media the only story they have.

It's not a waste of time, but there was never a chance for the 10 demands. And there won't be until circumstances change, probably via murderous violence, again.

Thais can't handle western democracy (mob rule). Be careful what they wish for it will probably lead to more fighting.

I was there last night and it was an extraordinary place to be. The students might have been leading the charge but the vast crowd was across the board - young, old, rich, poor. And it truly was the land of smiles, with an air of positive hope rarely seen in Thailand in recent years.

Clearly you were not there. The crowd was wide ranging and there was a ton of adult participation. There were live stages with music for hours, politicians and thousands of what might be called “housewives”. You seem to have made your mind up flicking through TV channels.

And based upon being there I can tell you that 99% were wearing masks in the crowd.

If there's no Covid in Thailand thanks to our esteemed leader, then there's no danger from large crowds.

Let them protest.

Just as there was a glimmer of hope for this country (borders opening one day soon), we go and screw things up again with what could be a large-scale and drawn-out protest.

But, for the long-term benefits, I tend to think it's all good.

They might create some numbers. Some local infections to scare the people off. They will do everything to stay in power . Get ready for fake news. New local infections are on the way and Mr. Pinocchio will blame the protesters for that.

The revolting peasants are revolting......is this a peasants coup?

I dont suppose you made your way to this part of the crowd where around 50% of them are wearing around their chins, very densely congregated?

If there is a spike then I cannot possibly see how the people can be to blame - they are listening to the news that Thailand has no infections.

A spike would just prove the governments lies and policy of hiding the truth

Don't worry they have enough Razor Wire to contain the Virus lol

COVID is the excuse for dismissing / criticizing these protests.

I come from a country where peaceful protests are attacked without provocation, where political accelerationists insert themselves into the crowd, and where the media lumps them all together.

If it weren't for COVID, there'd be another excuse just around the corner. That's what authoritarians like; excuses.

One Farang can not mention the word dictatorship or dictator on this forum but thousands of Thais can shout it in public. I understand completely. It is what it is.

Imagine living in a country where the army, which is supposed to defend the country and its people, takes over by force and rigs an election to stay in power. And the General in charge thinks its OK for the people not to be able to choose their own government, nor to speak freely about what they think. And that its OK for the military of the country to kidnap and kill people for objecting. Hmmm. It doesn't sound sustainable to me.

But with the Chinese Communist Party trying to extinguish democracy and install dictators all around the world, maybe it is going to end in violence. I hope not. But educated young people want to be free and not under the control of the CCP. Even those in China.

Do you really not see what's going on in this country ?? You'r just thinking about covid and blaming the protesters . Be happy that people are protesting and hope that something will change from this, because it might be good for your future as well steven100 . The way it's goimg now is bringing this country down but you don't seem to give a ???? . Bit selfish if you ask me .

Covid 19 doesn't grow out of thin air. There are no cases to worry about. How does anyone catch a virus that doesn't exist.

It exists.

And your claim that no masks are being worn is based on what? From the embedded pictures and the news on the television, the vast majority of people there are wearing masks and a surprisingly large proportion of them are actually wearing them correctly.

Masks still help with very large crowds, but are a bit less effective nonetheless, especially when people are shouting...

Well @Spock, if someone does catch Covid-19, it's a safe bet he's a redshirt.

This country has far bigger problems than a spike in Covid cases
