U.S. to surpass grim milestone of 200,000 COVID-19 deaths

(Reuters) - The death toll from the spread of coronavirus in the United States was approaching over 200,000 lives on Monday, more than double the number of fatalities in India, the country reporting the second-highest number of cases in the world.

 

The United States, on a weekly average, is now losing about 800 lives each day to the virus, according to a Reuters tally. That is down from a peak of 2,806 daily deaths recorded on April 15. (Graphic: https://tmsnrt.rs/2ZH76z6)

 

During the early months of the pandemic, 200,000 deaths was regarded by many as the maximum number of lives likely to be lost in the United States to the virus.

 

Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump defended his handling of the crisis. He admitted to playing down the danger of the coronavirus early on because he did not want to "create a panic."

 

With barely six weeks left before the election on Nov. 3, Trump is behind Democratic rival Joe Biden nationally in every major opinion poll and is neck and neck in key swing states. Trump's handling of the pandemic and subsequent economic downturn has battered his standing among many voters.

 

Trump has frequently questioned the advice of scientific experts on everything from the timing of a vaccine to reopening schools and businesses to wearing a mask. He has refused to support a national mask mandate and held large political rallies where few wore masks.

 

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield recently told Congress that a face mask would provide more guaranteed protection than a vaccine, which would only be broadly available by "late second quarter, third quarter 2021."

 

Trump refuted the timeline for the vaccine and said that it may be available in a matter of weeks and ahead of the Nov. 3 election. On Friday he said he expects all Americans to have a vaccine by April.

 

Biden, who often wears a mask and has said he would require masks nationwide, has warned against a rushed release of a vaccine, saying, "Let me be clear: I trust vaccines, I trust scientists, but I don't trust Donald Trump."

 

The CDC currently predicts that the U.S. death toll will reach as high as 218,000 by Oct. 10.

 

The University of Washington's health institute is forecasting coronavirus fatalities reaching 378,000 by the end of 2020, with the daily death toll skyrocketing to 3,000 per day in December.

 

Over 70% of those in the United States who have lost their lives to the virus were over the age of 65, according to CDC data https://bit.ly/32C1doQ.

 

The southern states of Texas and Florida contributed the most deaths in the United States in the past two weeks and was closely followed by California.

 

California, Texas and Florida - the three most populous U.S. states - have recorded the most coronavirus infections and have long surpassed the state of New York, which was the epicenter of the outbreak in early 2020. The country as a whole is reporting over 40,000 new infections on average each day.

 

As it battles a second wave of infections, the United States reported a 17% increase in the number of new cases last week compared with the previous seven days, with deaths rising 7% on average in the last, according to a Reuters analysis.

 

Six out of every 10,000 residents in the United States has died of the virus, according to Reuters data, one of the highest rates among developed nations.

 

Brazil follows the United States in the number of overall deaths due to the virus, with over 136,000 fatalities.

But let us not forget that under normal conditions, in years gone past, around 2 million people would have died this year in U.S. due to the normal death cycle. Flu has existed for a long time and is not going to go away. Get used to it and avoid people who are showing obvious signs of it ????

About 10% of what they originally anticipated right, 200,000, not 2 million but no one is saying that are they.

 

They keep pushing the numbers of deaths and infections. I would be interested to know if they are also recording how many deaths and infections that have happened with the influenza and pneumonia for the same time frame, obviously they won't be recording infections because apparently they don't spread like Covid-19, but would be interesting to know of the deaths.

 

You see I recall when someone died the CDC and the WHO said if they had any symptoms of Covid even if they had other underlying conditions, they said put it down as Covid and no autompsies, strange that.

You have taken a number out of context and inflated it.

 

In the early stage of the pandemic, there was a projection from the Imperial College in the UK, that suggested a WORST case scenario of 2.2 million deaths in the USA.  However, that value was if no one changed his/her behaviour. The projection stated; 

In the (unlikely) absence of any control measures or spontaneous changes in individual behavior, we would expect a peak in mortality (daily deaths) to occur after approximately 3 months.

 

It was not a "prediction" of the end result. Rather it  stated that if people didn't stop slobbering all over each other, getting too close, not covering their mouth when sneezing, not washing their hands etc. that the result would be dire.  People have been taking precautions since the start of the pandemic and they changed their behavior.

Grim future indeed when the commander-in-chief gave himself a nonchalant A for his management of the pandemic. He even pat himself on the back and proclaimed a possible A+ if vaccine and therapeutic are available (fantasy). He still has no plan and he still wear no mask and likes rallies even indoors. His followers lapped this all up and not following CDC guidelines. America is doomed to surpass more deaths and infection this fall. Only hope lies with a change of leadership this November. Citizens should vote him out to save their lives.

Many people live with various underlying health issues that due to intervention medically would usually expect to live extended lives even if not optimum condition.

Being infected  with Covid-19 exacerbates their compromised condition beyond the capacity of  intervention thus attributed to/as primary cause of death.

If a victim of cyanide poisoning dies because eventually their heart stops beating does so  because of the cyanide, not because they may  also have been  obese.

Because many people get the virus doesn't mean that they die from it and without an autopsy, there is the problem, oh that old patient died, what from, well there is a trace of Covid from him/her, but they may have been asymptomatic, they might not have died from the virus, they could have had a heart attack etc etc etc.

 

Viruses want a host, and as the virus mutates it wants to live in its host so that it can depend on the host for food and shelter, most viruses tend to become less virulent as they mutate. In other words it is in the viruses interest to infect people, but not to kill them because it needs a host.

Don't you think it is really well overdue to cease alleging false info concerning Covid? Data is in the public domain from credible organisations; easy to locate via a search engine. In the US average annual deaths from the flu vary between 24k - 62k. Covid-19 deaths in US at 200k after 8 months. 

 

WHO figures show worldwide annual flu deaths at approx 650k, Current 2020 worldwide Convid-19 deaths nearly one million, but Covid-19 can also cause long term serious health problems.

Why does the US have such a serious problem with Covid-19? 

Here are just a few of Trump's missteps:

• He knew how bad the virus was in February, but hid the truth.
• He leans on US health authorities to put politics before science.
• He failed to put in place a national testing and tracing system, arguing that testing doesn’t matter much.
• He pushed states to reopen before the virus was under control — helping to trigger a summer of sickness in the Sun Belt.
• He undermines his own government’s advice on mask-wearing. 
• He is actively organizing mass gatherings in the US — campaign rallies.
• And he is politicizing the vaccine. In search of an “October surprise” to boost his campaign before the election, Trump has claimed every American can get a shot by April -- even though no dose has yet been proven safe or effective.

There is a very easy way to check it, which is to compare with the number of excess deaths. As long as the number of covid-19 deaths is not higher than the number of excess deaths, it's likely not overcounted. If it's well below the number ofvexcess deaths, it's likely undercounted.

 

Actually in most countries, the number of reported covid-19 deaths is below the number of excess deaths.

 

For example, the US suffered more than 244,000 excess deaths between 1 March and 16 August, compared to 169,000 confirmed COVID-19 deaths during that period. The difference is 75,000 deaths, which is huge! So it's likely that the number of COVID-19 deaths has been undercounted.
