BANGKOK (NNT) - Let’s look at a food innovation for people who don’t eat meat or can’t eat but want to eat it. Today, there are more options. Makro has supported a Thai startup in launching plant-based meat or meat which is made from plant material. It is a meat substitute that provides complete nutrition for healthy diners.

Plant-based meat is a processed food innovation by Meat Avatar. It is produced by a Thai start-up entrepreneur who has processed plants into meat substitute that can be used in cooking. It is like real meat in terms of smell, taste and appearance and it is an alternative food for consumers who are health conscious.

Mr Wiphoo Lertsuraphibool, one of the founders of Meat Avatar, said the company buys raw materials from Thai farmers and processes it to help farmers earn more and improve the quality of Thai agricultural products to enhance their competitiveness in the world market. In the first phase, the products will be sold through Makro, and at hotels, restaurants and cafes. The company will also focus on penetrating the Asian market and launch Avatar Kitchen for food delivery in response to the behavior of consumers who like to order food online in the new normal era. It also aims to become a manufacturer of raw material for food processing plants.

Well now there will be some competition amongst the burger chains to buy his product as well.  Would like to see it sampled at some of the outlets that will be carrying it.  Can not get someone to buy the product without knowing if they like it.  Why waste money on something if it tastes like garbage when you cook it yourself as an experiment.  Best done on the company's dime.  I actually enjoyed the Beyond Meat Burger that was on Carl's junior's menu in the states.  You could also buy it in the market, and so I added it to my diet there before moving here.  I do not eat beef anymore, but I do enjoy the taste, and the beyond meat made a great taco salad topping.

It's NOT meat, meat comes from a living thing, it's made from plants,

to look like some form of meat, never tasted it,but if it does taste good,

smells good, that's a alternative to the real thing.

Being a vegetarian I welcome anything like this but it is NOT new!  Rimping stock meatless burgers and they are delicious!

Live in BK. Where can I buy these down here? TIA!

Not to forget Let's Plant Meat from Chiang Mai. Quite acceptable for an occasional treat (don't think any of these are 'health foods'!) and much cheaper than imported Beyond or Impossible burgers.

They were called Veggie Burgers in the US until they found a way to make ones taste like beef.  Still have meatless veggie burgers available. Frozen Veggie Burgers

Oh for goodness sake, there is no such thing as plant-based meat - it is meat substitute and is made using (quote):-

"Substitutes are often based on soybeans (such as tofu and tempeh), gluten, or peas"

You have to admit that if you ate one you would truly believe it was beef.  Tastes just like it. However, I get what your saying, its not meat but a vegan burger that tastes like beef.  No it is not Soylent Green....lol

Do you happen to know the brand names for each? I'll try to find them in BK. Trouble with all those options is that they're highly processed with big salt content.

Gluten-based meat substitutes (seitan/mian jin) have been around for hundreds if not thousands of years:
