Harming oneself will not help solve any problems, says psychiatrist

The former president of the Psychiatric Association of Thailand said that harming oneself like a Pheu Thai Party MP did in Parliament on Tuesday was not the correct way of managing conflicts.

Dr Yongyut Wongpiromsan, citing the case of Chiang Rai MP Wisarn Techatheerawat using a knife to slash his arm in Parliament, said physical and verbal violence or self-harm cannot be used as a tool to win a debate.

“It will not actually win any sympathy or understanding from others. It is important to respect the opinions of the other party and realise that they have good intentions towards the country as well. The opposite side should not always be seen as bad, otherwise problems will not get resolved in society,” Dr Yongyut said.

He said protests and civil disobedience can be demonstrated in many forms and should always have a valid reason. However, using violence against oneself will only worsen the issue and make the divide between the two sides even deeper.

The psychiatrist said the best way to handle differences is to be open to the other side’s opinions without opting for violence.

“Conflicts should be resolved peacefully, no matter which side you come from. Don’t see people as enemies. Using obnoxious words against the other side will only lead to violence, which people with power, such as the state or public, should be careful about,” he said.

Unless your name is Prayuth or Pareena in which case it solves a lot of problems, especially if it is terminal.

Nothing new .. That was already discovered by the Greeks and the Romans.

Interesting choice of an image, considering Seneca had been ordered by Nero to kill himself.

I look at it this way.  He himself is willing to take the pain and suffering within the Parliamentary chambers so that the rest of Thailand can be safe and moved forward without bloodshed.  He has basically put himself on the cross, so others may live. A very noble gesture.  A little misguided maybe, but he still made a poignant message.

The curious thing is that the despot of Nero also committed suicide with his dagger and with his death, a dynasty of coup leaders like Julius Caesar and Augustus.... Ended.

He sounds like a regime quack. Wonder how much his brown envelope contained for saying such garbage. So what does he suggest, pour gasoline on himself and set his body on fire? It is only going to get worse as this government creates a bigger hatred and divide.

There are many forms of self-harm. THe attention seeking that was on display in the parliament was probably just that and not really typical of a lot of self-harm.

There is also deliberative suicide, they type of suicide that is usually successful as it is thought through and death is the desired outcome.

Then there is another form of self-harm which people are driven to. They don't do it to "solve" any problem but talk about doing it to release built up mental pain and tension.

The psychiatrist's comments do not really address any of these kinds of self-harm. Did he have something else in mind?
