Mobile network that facilitates internet access without express data package?

Now this requires some independent thinking, nowadays where we all have been indoctrinated to parrot 'smartphone, hotspot, data package' (and what have you), thus without any thinking of ourselves, then act accordingly. Just do what everybody does and you will be safe - right?!

 

Let's focus on the 3rd item and rectify: This european (it's NOT american) system's layout is such that data packages are not impossible, but the basic setting is that you have credit - either real credit on your SIM card, or virtual credit because it's you and your name -, and then you can use your connection to whatever you want to do with your credit at any given moment - calls, texts (SMS) or internet access. This is what I want also here, because it serves my needs best. 

 

AIS is trying to force me through their clue/useless hotline kids to buy data packages. I am certain these kids don't know what they're doing - they're just following instructions. And we can't reach anyone above them, thanks to the infamous americanised robot economy that since 2020 seems to have been mandatory, virtually mildewing the entire world. 

 

Could it be there's someone among you who handles things as I want to and actually has found a way through another operator, or - if AIS - knows the magic word and would share it with me?

All SIMs allow data access without applying a data package.

They all have a basic main package. For instance: https://www.ais.co.th/one-2-call/en/main_pack.html

 

According to that, The ONE SIM has a cost of 1.5 baht per MB, if you just want to use the Internet and pay from your credit.

You can change the main package promo by dialling *777 or via MyAIS.

 

So, you don't need to do anything other than to check the cost of your particular main package.

No reason to contact AIS at all.

I just didn't get connected to the internet, although all the conditions on my end seemed to be met. My suspicion was that they had this function disabled, in order to promote their package sales. After some haggling with the hotline, they appear to have facilitated the function, because now I can access 3G internet with the phone's browser. 

 

However it seems that tethering is still disabled at their end: At this time I can't get connected with my notebook to 3G (via the phone - neither USB nor Bluetooth). All this used to be possible earlier...

You really do not want to do that without a data bundle. The main page of a news paper I read online is almost 10 MB. Without a data bundle this will cost you 15 Baht. Only to look at 1 page. The cost of browsing websites for half an hour is probably higher than paying for an unlimited 1 month bundle. Maybe they disabled it to protect you against yourself (only a guess).

The connection does now what I wanted: There's 3G access from my notebook via the phone's modem. So AIS must have changed the settings at their end. Regarding the question which tariff is better: Probably the one with the data package. But for the very occasional user, my arrangement may be more practical, everything considered. Let's see - I'll give it a try and will make new arrangements, if desirable...

It's technically not possible for the provider to disable tethering on your phone (unless maybe the phone would come from the provider, and he manipulated the operating system to disable tethering, but assuming you were ever able to tether with your phone then that's not the reason). So if tethering isn't working it's because of a problem on your side.
