Prayut: Attack on foreigner damaged Thailand's image

Thailand's prime minister Prayut Chan-ocha has roundly condemned the attack on the Russian man at a protest in Jomtien, Pattaya on Sunday.

He said that the terrible incident had damaged the image of Thailand and that of all Thais.

He said that foreigners were not involved in the protests in Thailand even though they might comment.

A protest leader called Narathiwat "Ken" Khamma headbutted the 52 year old Russian later alleging that the foreigner had called the protesters the "dregs of society" and a "virus" for damaging Pattaya and the wider economy.

He was bailed in the sum of 10,000 baht after being charged with assault.

Prayut called for calm and legal protests, saying that diverging opinions were normal in a democracy like Thailand.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting to discuss latest statements coming from protests leaders at Ramkhamhaeng University he called for de- escalation, respect for authority and the rule of law and said that his duty was to protect the public and not take sides.

In other news, a man who head butted democracy in Thailand back in 2014 said...

One of Prayuth's allies in the parliament is attacking a foreigner and his foundation with a ridiculous legal case demanding 50,000,000 Baht, trying to close their wildlife conservation projects and take it over. I don't hear him say a word about these kind of cases.

The Russian man shouted abuse at the protesters, saying they were scum and trash. Maybe it would have been better to stay out of their politics instead, but hey, he is a Russian... (they never do).

I doubt the average Russian would have this in his vocabulary.  I doubt the average Thai would understand either, particularly if delivered in English with a Russian accent.

How does this damage Thailand's reputation more than having a drug smuggler in your cabinet?

  • Popular Post

Well it isn't unexpected that the leader of government uses this incident to his advantage, isn't?

While I agree with some of the comments here, when it comes to the state of the "Thai democracy", I am also appalled by the sad reality that violent thugs are leading the movement for democracy.

Replacing  one form of violence by another won't help the country.

...and his common law wife??? has just been appointed to a government position.....mental.

His own brother is in the Senate and picked him to be PM. This is not damaging at all?

He only has to look within, for the origins of the destruction of Thailand's image. His heinous and toxic army are the major boil, on the face of the nation. Blame others all you want, and continue being a very, very small man and refuse to take any responsibility for the destruction you have caused. It makes no difference. We all see right through you, as if you were Mr. Saran Wrap. Sooner or later, you will be gone, baby gone, and you will be disgraced, and remembered and mocked, with the hatred you richly deserve. Mr. water cannon, you need to go. Get out. Get out now.

I seriously doubt that Ken and Boris could communicate well enough for this to be the case.

Was it said in Thai, English or Russian?

From the video, it seems that the only English the Thai can say is "you" and "<deleted>"

Your boy Anutin and his racist tantrum did more damage than this.

Not to mention the convicted drug dealer in your cabinet.

Coups never hurt Thailand's image though right?  locking up student activists?  supressing voting and free speech?
