Farmers in Kalasin and Nakhon Ratchasima have discovered a perfectly safe place to dry their paddy – in state-owned compounds.

Farmer Athit Poonlarp, 43, said this way there is no fear of the rice being squashed by cars or stolen, adding that the price of rice at present is almost Bt10 per kilo or Bt10,000 per tonne.

The farmer said apart from ensuring the safety of motorists, drying the paddy within the eyesight of police officers at the Nakung Police Station will help thwart thieves, especially since there were many cases of rice being stolen during this harvest.

Meanwhile, farmer Nadda PraewJapo, 72, in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Chum Phuang district said district chief Pairat Wittayanumas is letting farmers dry their paddy in the district office’s complex. She added that the price of paddy rice currently stands at between Bt11 and Bt12 per kilo.

"The district office has also set up lights and deployed officials to take care of the rice, so we can rest at home without worry that someone will steal it,” she said.
