Yeah...we have some rice fields across from our MooBaan and they are still very mucky...just been replanted though I think. The straw was taken off a while ago before they flooded with the heavy rains at the end of the  season I think.

This year we still have a lot of water laying in some of the rice fields, here in our area. Some fields you cannot get in to bale the straw. The ones we did bale, the first time we loaded the the trailer the field looked dry, however half way across the field the wheels broke through the dry top crust and got stuck, luckily did not plant the tractor. Unloaded half the trailer and manage to pull it out with a long web sling so able to get tractor onto dryer ground. Since then been loading on the road, hopefully this wind and dry weather will help to dry the fields up. Been stuck ploughing rice fields before at the start of the season, however first time for this time of the year. Joys of farming ????????????

Hi Slugs,

How did you get on with your rice planter this year and are you starting to see any benefits of the the lime you applied.

Good to hear your keeping busy????

Hi FarmerJo,

The field where we applied the lime has responded very good. The one particular area in the field where previously we could not get anything to grow has been a big change. We planted sweet Israeli (Napier) grass in this field, and the crop has seen  the same growth throughout the field. Really pleased with the results. As for our rice, it’s been a terrible year for us. Most of our rice field lands do not retain the water very good. Hence what little rain we got at the beginning of the wet season resulted in the rice seedlings dying off. I redrilled most of the fields, but again due to lack of rains and the ability for them to retain water, ended up cutting half the fields for cattle feed as had more grass grow then rice. The planter is working good, we had good germination with the rice, however due to lack of rains the crop failed. The planter has not been idle, as have been using it to drill sweet corn for cattle feed.
