WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President-elect Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden said on Wednesday the U.S. Attorney's Office in Delaware is investigating his tax affairs.

"I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors," Hunter Biden said in a statement.

He said he learned of the investigation for the first time on Tuesday when prosecutors informed his lawyer of the probe.

The Biden transition team on Wednesday released a statement saying, "President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger."

CNN reported that investigators have been examining multiple financial issues, including whether Hunter Biden and his associates violated tax and money laundering laws in business dealings in foreign countries, principally China, according to two people briefed on the probe.

The investigation began as early as 2018, predating the arrival of William Barr as attorney general, two people briefed on the investigation told CNN.

Reuters could not confirm the reports. The U.S. Attorney's Office declined to comment.

Hunter Biden became a focus of attacks from President Donald Trump and his Republican allies in the campaign for the White House.

Trump and Republicans have questioned potential conflicts of interest from his position on the board of a Ukrainian energy company at the time Democrat Joe Biden served as vice president. Trump's actions in connection with the Ukrainian matter resulted in his impeachment by the Democrat-majority U.S. House of Representatives last January.

Trump also called during the campaign for China to investigate the involvement of Biden’s son in a fund that sought to raise Chinese capital. Trump accused the younger Biden of using his position of influence to secure China's financial backing for his investments.

Trump never provided evidence to support this claim and Hunter Biden has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

I'll now repeat something I saw posted several times on other forums: "They're lucky Hunter wasn't the one running. He's traveling the world, he's got the hottest Instagram hookers, the best drugs. He'd win by a landslide. He's living the dream." ????

Jokes aside, I find it quite telling that in the days leading up to the election, whoever was attempting to subvert Biden's chances with this treasure trove of info from the stolen laptop or whatever, could only give us tons and tons of pics of Hunter's escapades. Sure, he's a party animal, and certainly has some issues. But there was no smoking gun tying him nor Dad to China or whoever.

That being said, it's definitely time for Hunter to go away now. He has no business anywhere near politics with those issues. I'm sure he's got enough stashed away for a nice retirement in a cabin by a lake, clean and sober.

I do not admit he is president elect, IMO there is no such thing at least not until the electoral college votes, just following the rules.

Er - I'm not aware your hero Trump has built any kind of reputation for following rules, he tends to tear the rule book up instead.

Perhaps he subscribes to the aphorism rules are for the obedience of fools, and the guidance of wise men.

It is really a very simple proposition . If Hunter or anyone else did something illegal with his taxes or anything else he should face the consequences like anyone else. I don't know what all the brouhaha is all about.

The brouhaha is about Trump acolytes and sycophants being enabled to do look over there.

Hunter is a favorite target of Trump's cult members.  Along with AOC, Hillary, Obama, etc, etc, etc.  All dog whistles meant to rile up the clueless.
