SURAT THANI (NNT) - The flooding disaster in the southern region has started to improve with water levels decreasing in several areas and related agencies now starting restorative works in areas of severe damage. Some areas downstream close to the sea are still however submerged.

The water level in Ta Pi river in Surat Thani has receded since yesterday, but still remains higher than usual at 74 centimeters.

The river has overflowed into villages in the lower sections of the river, including Ban Nai and Ban Laem Phai in Khian Sa District, where roads have been cut due to the flooding, forcing some 60 households to move their belongings and pets to the villages’ temporary disaster shelter.

It is expected the situation here will resolve itself in 3-4 days should there be no more rain, as the flooding is currently draining into the sea through Phunphin District and partially through the city district of Surat Thani.

So far, flooding has been reported in eight districts of Surat Thani - Phrasaeng, Wiang Sa, Khian Sa, Ban Na San, Ban Na Doem, Phunphin, Muang, and Kanchanadit districts. 33,083 villagers from 9,252 households have been affected.

Several government agencies and private firms have already given assistance to flood victims. The 62nd class alumni from the Thailand National Defence College has joined forces with Provincial Police Region 8 headquarters, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, and Baansuay Group Company Limited, and have delivered disaster supply bags to affected persons in Phunphin district. Some villages can now only be reached on foot as the main roads are submerged, cutting off all car access.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat, government agencies have already started restorative works and repairs to damages as the flood water has already subsided. Officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment and volunteers have cleaned up communities and the business district of the province previously flooded.

Nakhon Si Thammarat City Municipality has been working around the clock to clear away all garbage and debris, before it starts to smell.
