As I have done a few times in my life when things have gone belly up, start at the bottom again and work your way up, considering the amount of people around the world who are currently out of work and cash, I’d be catering for the ( Covid free ) backpackers and retirees to start with rather than trying to start at the top.

Don't see any of this working ........

Just to suddenly declare that some destination is top notch and expect to pay top dollar is a recipe for disaster.

But what about those pesky LBs ?  Are they trained to steal from the Hi So?

Ok am here in lanzarote with a 1/2 doz less wanting to return to LOS expats

This place is spotless, friendly, no loud motorbikes, duel pricing, been classed and ridiculed as a farang and a bottle of wine €2 up in fact its so cheap compared to LOS

only thing missing is the ladies.

we all lived in pattaya for years thailand is done and that was before covid 19 which dosent exsist in thailand

flights will slowly return but prices will hurt som nom na thailand the braindead TAT has to be hopeful but that all it is.

Even looking a real estate here no 10% discount for locals

Manager reported that Pattaya is now completely rebranding itself for the tourist season and the year ahead in these much changed Covid-19 times.

 

The TAT and City Hall along with tourism businesses have agreed on a completely new approach.

 

Out has gone the old name - Pattaya is no more.

 

Now is the new name : NEO PATTAYA!

 

And it comes with the all important hashtag in Thai (as most of the tourists are expected to be in 2021):

 

#Pattaya mai maa daay ngai or #How on earth can't you come!

 

It looks like it's out with the sleaze and in with wholesome, natural, educational, high quality values, notes Thaivisa.

 

Indeed "High" was the buzzword after Pattaya's mayor, the TAT reps, business leaders and a beauty queen all had their pictures taken in front of a backdrop of "Fat Coco" (a popular beach club in the resort).

 

Neo Pattaya is no longer about seedy bars and nightlife. 

 

Now the focus is on the economy, society, environment and culture. It's not just about the fun either - it's about being safe and clean in these pandemic times. 

 

The main buzzword was "Go High" though this was accompanied by "High Quality" "High Value" "High Spending" and "High Experience".

 

The participants seemed "heady" with all the highs!

 

These lofty ideals would be accomplished with activities like taking yachts to "hidden islands" with sea based enjoyment for all along the lines of picnics, sea flyer, paddle board and floating ocean pools. 

 

And of course Neo Pattaya is a family resort where the kids' needs are paramount so zoos and animal shows were stressed with the excitement of Go Karts and Bungy Jumping.

 

Not to mention the many events that Pattaya has become famous for such as this weekend's music festival and the new year countdown.

 

Targets now seem to be high spending Thais rather than yesteryear's focus on and acceptance of westerners in singlets, notes Thaivisa.

 

And they want more and more FIT tourists - Fully Independent Travellers. 

 

It appears that the drive towards the EEC or Eastern Economic Corridor expansion is heralding the end of the old Pattaya.

Do guests have to spend a minimum amount, 50,000Baht a day, 500,000Baht a day?

May I take the liberty to point out that the authorities aim to make pattaya free from sex industry and want to portray it as a clean , family friendly city for chinese , koreans , japanese etc. Those people generally take short holidays and spend good amount of money. 

What are they on ?  I want some !!!

Personally whilst I love Thailand in general, I’m not a big fan of Pattaya itself. Don’t get me wrong, the occasional 3 or 4 days fun with the boys if ever they are over at the same time as me is great but that is enough for me. 
 

However to think that they can suddenly turn it into some kind of high end resort though is nothing but a massive pipe dream. Let’s be honest, prior to Covid you couldn’t even walk down Beach Road in the daytime without being accosted several times by aggressive hawkers trying to sell you viagra, cigarettes or fake sunglasses at inflated prices? The streets, beach and sea are filthy, with garbage piled up all over the place and out of date overflowing sewers a regular occurrence. Not to mention the state of the pavements/ sidewalks and pedestrian crossings with walls or other obstructions at one end?

 

As an old mate of mine sometimes states, ‘you can’t polish a turd’, so basically the only way to achieve it would be to flatten everything from Soi Buakhao/3rd Road to the beach, put in completely new infrastructure capable of handling the demand and start again. <deleted>, surely some of the bigwigs must have been on a jolly or two to countries that actually have actual high end resorts so know what they look like? 

To 'sell' Pattaya they need to do some serious market research (maybe they have) and identify/predict who its future patrons will be.........expats......high rollers from China.......Russian mafia.....  and then set out their stall to attract them.

 

This is huge and relies on a great deal of data ...and people who know what they are actually doing.

Why they don't drive all these people to Hua Hin?

Plenty of place here and a nice environment for them

Don't get me wrong......I love Pattaya (and a lot of the people who work there)..... my comment is meant to illustrate the absurdity of it being somewhere that aspires to attract high end tourists.........as a long term (very long term) aim fine.....but if that is the objective you have to have all the plans in place to achieve it....not jump the gun and just stick Neo in front of its name.

 Just come back from Wongamat, Pullman so busy they are parking on the road outside, as soon as the sun went down the beach in front of the Centara was jammed. These are not cheap hotels. All Thais, I was the only farang in sight.
