BANGKOK (NNT) - The lockdown of Samut Sakhon province due to a recent surge in COVID-19 infections is estimated to be causing a billion baht a day in economic damage, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). Samut Sakhon is one of Thailand’s industrial bases with more than 6,000 factories.

The FTI Chairman, Supant Mongkolsuthree, said today that of the 6,000 factories in Samut Sakhon, 900 of them are FTI members, with some 91,000 migrant staff, all of whom are legal workers. Most factories provide them with accommodation that is less crowded, and they have to undergo thermal scanning before entering the workplace. At this stage, most factories are operating normally; only Thai Union Group Public Company Limited has announced a 14-day closure for thorough inspection and cleaning, after one of its workers tested positive for COVID-19.

The FTI has prepared measures to limit the spread of COVID-19. Each factory is to act according to the situation, while allowing some workers to work from home. Workers, who are not able to enter their factories at this time, have to follow the disease-control measures strictly. The federation called on the government to conduct random testing in risk areas to help limit the spread, and to deal immediately with any unregistered migrant workers.

The lockdown of Samut Sakhon has disrupted trade in seafood markets and suspended related business operations, causing about 1 billion baht a day in economic damage.

No chance it  will  be  contained, a  friend of  ours in the Police tells  us they have put tape around the area  but  many are sneaking through it to GET  OUT. Youd  better stand  by for lockdown

Totally agree, proven in almost every country worldwide it's impossible to contain.

Can you imagine them all working and living together with Covid on the loose?

And now the area is locked down to keep them together.

I'm going out today to buy a few boxes of beer, this isn't going to end well.
