Rayong province has found 27 new cases of Covid-19, raising the number of patients to 36 in the last three days after the latest outbreak, provincial governor Charna Iamsang said on Saturday.

On December 23, a Rayong resident went to a hospital in Bangkok for medical treatment. The positive test was initially considered a case from the capital.

After that the Rayong authorities started investigation and found on December 24 that a relative of that person was also infected. This case was considered the first case in Rayong in the recent outbreak after which another eight cases were found the following day.

On Saturday,  27 more  infections were found.

My wife said Thai TV news this morning was talking about the cases in Rayong being related to some kind of illegal gambling establishment.

More info on that here:

"He said that it is unclear whether it was an illegal gambling den, noting that the gamblers were reluctant to tell the officials, making it difficult to trace their contacts for screening, thus increasing the risk of more infections.

Besides the nine known to be infected, four others are under investigation."

No. The real number IS much higher. Think tip of the iceberg. Not only in Thailand of course. Nobody knows the factor involved. Double? Ten times? Nobody knows.

The only good news about this real recent outbreak is that hopefully Thais will cooperate much more with mitigation measures again. It's been widely reported that masking had gone down dramatically. Bizarrely, most Thais seem to think if you're masked you don't need to distance though.

They should probably close bars and indoor restaurants nationally and pump up the speed of their vaccine program.

So outdoor restaurants are ok but not outdoor bars

U can lock it down but as found in uk, 80% of infection spread by those 20% who ignored the rules and guidelines.

Do you have any evidence for this assertion?

BP reported that these 27 contracted the virus when attending an illegal gambling den and are now refusing to say who the other attendees were.......this is going to spread like wild fire. Thailand is now (almost) in the same situation as it was in March.

How right you are! Unfortunately, all over the world the infection is spread by people ignoring the rules and/or guidelines, or some even protesting against "the loss of liberties" connected therewith. What a stupidity and carelessness for the safety of others.

Simply not true. The health care workers getting infected are not breaking rules. There is no evidence the meat packers getting infected are breaking any rules. The British rioters, who earlier this year went on the rampage and broke the rules show no sign of of heightened infection rates. The school children who were told it was safe to go back to school and got infected were not breaking any rules, which by the way, change...sometimes over night.

Not necessarily . What do gambling dens, seafood factories, dormatories and  indoor bars have in common : close prolonged close contact with many people in  poorly ventilated indoor spaces. It is these environments that cause the clusters. Most on this forum should be able to avoid the aboves.

My wife says the gambling dens were cock fighting rings.

In my experience it is best say arrr...yes and show clear outward signs of agreeing that she must be correct.

The spectators would need very strong spectacles to view Thai cocks.

But could they spot the rings?

The Bridge Club has been banned due to being an obvious link to the threat to national security and will be so until the cards above the Jack have been renamed.

I can also see Chess being banned in future unless a new piece gets added where the movement is not only left and right but moves back twice the steps as it moves forward, moves up and down and can only be removed by the sacrifice of all pawns.

Easy to spot as they are wearing military uniforms with lots of medals.
