It's not anal farangsay, it's pedantic. Many people have not been taught the difference between 'advise' and 'advice' - 'practise' and 'practice' etc. It's the simple verb versus noun rule! I don't let it bother me although I do have my own pet hates. 'Centered around' is a perfect example, drives me mad! My wife, however, is totally pedantic. When driving along the motorway she never ceases to amaze me. 'Think don't drive tired' always gets the response, 'Why should I think don't drive tired?' Or, 'Don't drive tired what?' Or, 'That isn't even a sentance!'

Personally, I feel comunication is about communicating! So if I know what it means I'm happy.

ps I know I have other pet hates but I can't recall them right now... I'll be back.

The older I get the less pedantic I get. By now my limit is 200m. Beyond that it's bus or taxi.

Thanks for a new one.

Sentence (csabebs sentance)

csabebs = commonly spelt as by erudite biblical scholars.

Their. csa there.

You. csa u. I know that's just lazt textish but it still irritates me.

Following on from suega's wife's rant:-

Sign on the M6 : Speed kills! The drug or the velocity? Anyway it aint the speed (velocity) that kills it's the impact.

Sign where the M6 and M42 split : Use both lanes. What at the same time, or do I meander?

I think you need to accept that this forum is used by people from a diverse range of countries and backgrounds. There are spelling differences between the US and the Commonwealth Countries. Add to that the fact that there are a sizeable number of people on TV who come from countries where English is not their first language. I sometimes get a laugh from the unintentional mistakes simply because they are better than the intended message but in the same way that my staff derive considerable amusement from my written Thai I am rarely insensitive enough to make comment.

The more common situation I encounter is when the two Americans in Bangkok demand that all correspondence be sent out using their so called "International Language" which subsitutes color for colour, labor for labour, cannot differentiate between advise and advice, practise and practice etc.

I think for most of us who have lived in countries where Englsh is not the native language (eg America :D) are used to overlooking grammatical or spelling indiscretions. On Thai Visa I try to use the adage look for the content not the carriage.

I could be described as a native English speaker but there are spellings and grammatical rules that completely baffle me. Spelling and grammar mistakes don't bother me at all when I know the speaker/writer is not a native speaker, hel_ they are to be highly commended on their achievement.

But there are people who I am fairly sure are native English speakers who insist on these rogue spellings almost as a sort of street credibility thing.

A lot of money was spent on my education, well OK four pounds seven and threppence, and it would be wasted if I didn't at least try and get it right.

Just thought of another one.

the csa teh.

I'm not that old!

Yes, the spellings have been known to pee me off, but the things I really hate are txt spk and the non-usage of punctuation and uppercase letters, when appropriate. My five year old knows better than that! If it were due to ignorance, OK, fair enough, but it seems to be a street cred thing. What's street cred about not being able to put a coherent sentence together?

You know what NR, I couldn't agree more.

English is my first language, but I still make mistakes with grammar, spelling, punctuation etc..... I've bin to skool, but I still make mistakes.

It is the intentional corruption of my mother tongue that makes me want to shove pencils in the perpetrators eyes.

I can just about take 'l8r' in an SMS (but it makes my skin crawl, it's only one or two more button to press) .... in an email or, well, any other internet medium, there is just no need. It just smacks of laziness.

//edit/cardinal sin

P.S. I don't have a problem with abbreviations or the odd acronym.

NR, Thaddeus we are as one one this one. I also hate textish. Even when I'm sending an sms I will use the correct spelling (as far as I'm able), correct punctuation and capitals where appropriate. It might take a little longer but I'm damned if I'll be dragged down to the gutter. I don't need street cred, I am I.

When ever I see someone typing "how r u?" or similar I always jump to the conclusion that the person is slightly dim.

It's partially a matter of getting used to. Am I right in assuming that must of you who cannot hack SMS language were already over 20 when mobile phones became widely used?

Not that I recommend txtspk for forum posting or other purposes. I agree this type of writing looks much better when structured in the traditional way. But in text messages you save money and time by being brief, so using abbreviated forms, where comprehensible, is surely a sign of being smart (economical) rather than dim-witted? :o

It's funny, I never misspelt 'it's/its', 'their/they're/there' in the past - it is something I have started to do since participating in forum conversations with native speakers. It bugs me no end when I find myself doing it.

Native speakers often make more spelling mistakes than second language learners (except for novices), I guess due to the fact that natives learn to speak the language before reading and writing it, whereas second language learners in most cases will see the word in writing and practice writing it, at the same time as, or even before, learning how to pronounce it... then again, we can come up with ungrammatical and weird sentences that a native speaker would never produce.

Actually I find this a recent phenomenon , geogically speaking. and I think it has little to

do with learning to speak before you learn to read and write (if any of you have done it

the other way round please report to the twilight zone). Maybe it is a natural evolution of

the language (have you ever tried to read Chaucer ?) but I think it stems from ignorance

and laziness. Maybe that is how languages evolve. I see much criticism of Thai education

on this forum , often concerning English teaching by Thai nationals , but do you really suppose

that some of the "naytiv speekurs" on this forum would do better ?

So why don't we write our work emails and letters that way?

Actually the US corp of Engineers discovered that by staightening sections of the mississippi they made the flooding worse because the river sped up and didn't have the opportunity to spill some of the excess over the levees. This was after spending millions of dollars from the time of the Great Depression as a land works excercise. Now they are trying to work out ways of putting some bends back it to it which will be much harder to do. May have to wait for the next great crash to be able to afford the job and to provide the employment to millions of out of work computer programmers etc :o

I used to use that line on women in my youth but they insisted on choosing morality over nature. :o
